Jason LaCanfora: Dolphins Trying To Get Back Into the Second Round

While I agree with you that a franchise QB is significantly better than an all pro center and a mediocre QN, you are making a big assumption. That people can convince themselves that prospect is a franchise QB with 100% conviction. I doubt that ever happens. It is always a cost and reward situation. The cost of gambling on a QB from your draft slot is high. The cost of moving up in the first round to pick a QB is enormous. That is not the same thing as moving into the second round.

The cost of not have a quarterback is having a ****ty team. If you're not willing to take a risk to get a top guy, you don't deserve to run a football team. 2nd round QBs almost never work. In the last 20 years or so, there have only been like two or three who have turned into franchise guys.

I am actually on board with a straight trade of our first next year for Mallett early in the second. This only works if our FO is conviceted about Mallett, which i am.

Our 1st round pick next year is going to a QB one way or another. Either we stick with Henne this year and are DEFINITELY in the market for a QB next year. Meaning we have to hope against hope that it isnt a Jamarcus Russel/Brady Quinn draft class, or a Sam Bradford draft class, where there was only one good QB and we have no shot at him (likely scenario because of Luck). OR we trade for Kolb, which will likely cost us that 1st anyhow. I also think that too high of a premium is put on mid and late first round picks which often just become solid starters or busts (Odrick, Ginn, Jason Allen, Merling*, and probably Pouncey).

I think Mallett for next years first is a pretty safe pick when compared to the above. Also, we can hold on to our 3rd and take advantage of a deep Rb class.

Leave day 2 with Pouncey, Mallett and a running back.

well maybe it could turn into 3 or 4?

I think some people on this board seriously underestimate the ability of Ryan Mallett, Andy Dalton and Colin Kaepernick to be a franchise QB. Mallett has all the tools, has learned under a former NFL coach and a demanding offensive mind in Bobby Petrino, and has won everywhere he has been. Dalton is mobile, one of the most accurate QB's in the draft, and most importantly he is a leader and a winner, guy is a rock solid second rounder and maybe he isn't a top 10 potential QB, he's a guy that won't hurt your team, he can manage the team and direct them with his leadership. And lastly is Kaepernick. Like CK mentioned, it's not hard to find reasons to fall in love with this guy. He's 6'6" 230+ pounds, a rocket for an arm, 4.5 speed. He's a Cam Newton clone, with maybe more potential. As much potential as anyone in this draft. Jason La Canfora mentioned on NFL Network that the same coach who worked out both Cam and Colin in the offseason believes Kaepernick is the better prospect and has more upside. Say no more, I'm sold.

Surround any of these guys with the right supporting cast, ala a good line (upgraded in first, Mike Pouncey), a RB in the 3rd (Ryan Williams or Taiwan Jones?) and maybe in FA (DeAngelo Williams?), a deep threat, vertical TE threat (Mallett or Kaepernick's teammates D.J. Williams or Virgil Green?), a deep threat WR in the 5th and 6th (Ricardo Lockette and Aldrick Robinson) and add depth in the 7th round with those last three picks. Who cares if we don't have a first round pick next year, if we finished the draft out like that, I'd feel pretty good about the future of this franchise. If that doesn't get you excited, you don't have a pulse. Not sure if that's the way it's going to go down, but I certainly hope so!

Ideally, I hope this is how we finish and I think this will go a long way towards getting us in the right direction as a team:

(Trade next year's first for #33)

2nd Round: Ryan Mallett, Quarterback, Arkansas
3rd Round: Taiwan Jones, Running Back, Eastern Washington
4th Round: D.J. Williams, Tight End, Arkansas
5th Round: Ricardo Lockette, Fort Valley State
6th Round: Aldrick Robinson, Wide Receiver, SMU
7th Round: Damien Berry, Running Back, Miami (Fla.)
7th Round: D'Aundre Reed, Defensive End, Arizona
7th Round: Byron Bell, Offensive Tackle, New Mexico

I love it, but, trading for #33 would be with new england. Won't happen at 33 nor would I enjoy having the fins 1st being NE's first next year. Along with NO's, their own, and ours, 3 1st round picks. LOL

If we waste a 1st next year on yet another 2nd round QB it better be Ryan Mallett. Id be ok with trading up for Mallett because he actually has the potential to be a good QB. If we trade up for Dalton than all we're doing is wasting a 1st round pick next year that our hopefully new, competent head coach next year could've used. What's worse than wasting a 2nd round pick on a 3/4th round QB like Dalton and even Kaepernick? Wasting next years 1st on a 3/4th round QB, which is exactly what makes me think the Dolphins will do just that. They do things *** backwards so we should plan on seeing Andy Dalton next year in a Fins uniform or we'll wait and take some scrub in the 3rd. If we hadnt taken a QB period in the last 5 years, with all the 2nd rounders we wasted we could have all our holes filled with quality starters outside of QB, then we could afford to actually move up in the top 10 and take a legit QB prospect.

trading next years first for New Englands 33 would be full retard. It would be fair if we got one of their firsts and 33 or their other second. It might make sense if you're trying to get over a super bowl hump (meaning next years first would be 20+) but when your trying to get over the break even hump it would be dumb dumb dumb. Having said that I wouldn't put it past this FO.

We're just a few key injuries away from being a top 5 pick next season. I mean if Carpenter goes down we'll have the first pick guaranteed...

this is what happens when you have a GM and HC that have no job security. If they bomb this year those 2012 picks they trade away are the next regime's problem. They really have no reason to preserve next year's picks since they have no guarantees after this year.

The idea is to create a winning team. It isn't like getting fired is ever a good thing. They have to do all they can to make sure they don't get let go b/c of another mediocre season.

I'll believe it when I see it. We'll just sit back in round three and take an offensive or defensive lineman I'm assuming.
