I think one person you could look at to compare Jason Taylor with is Hall of Fame Linebacker Andre Tippet of the New England Patriots who played from 1982-1993.

1. In Tippett's 12 year career he played for THREE playoff teams, and ONE AFC Champion (1985). Jason Taylor has also played 12 years and has played for FIVE playoff teams, but no AFC Champions/Superbowls.

2. Tippett had 100 sacks in 151 games. Taylor has 120 sacks in 185 games.

3. Tippett was selected 5 times to the Pro Bowl. Taylor has been selected 6 times. Tippett was selected 2x First team All-Pro selection, and 2x Second Team. JT has been selected 3X First team, and 1X Second Team. Tippett had one Co-Defensive Player of the Year award. JT has one Defensive Player of the Year Award.

4. Tippett had one career INT, 19 fumbles recovered, and two career TD's. JT has seven career INT's, 26 fumbles recovered and eight TD's.

5. JT's numbers are better than Andre Tippet's numbers right now. JT has only missed 7 games in his twelve year career. Andre Tippett missed 24 games in his career. I think you could also argue that JT goes against much bigger, stronger O-lineman, and left tackles than Tippett did, and JT spent many years being double teamed. If you get elected based on numbers, JT is a lock.

Maybe. I don't think anyone outside the fanbase sees Jason Taylor as they did Andre Tippett.

Remember...The greatest punter in the history of the game is not in. Keuch is not in. Don't go thinking anyone is a lock.

I think Zach Thomas may end up in the category of great players but not quite Hall of Famers. Randy Gradishar, Keuch, and Karl Mecklenburg are also in this close by not there category. I think Jake Scott is another Dolphin that has gotten short changed. Ray Guy isn't in....but no punters have ever been elected to the Hall of Fame, and I think only one or two kickers?

Fair enough.

I just dont see him as a lock.

He's not HOF.....

Not unless he somehow can boost his sack totals past like 140, which i can't see happening unless he suddenly returns to 13 sack form this year. Even if he did he'd still have to play another year, and who knows what his deal is there, the guy has been rumored to be considering retirement for like three years.

Very few defensive players are in the HOF and very few of the all-time sack leaders are in. Taylor unlike many other players does have a DPOY award, but he doesn't have a Super Bowl ring, or a history of dominating in big games (playoffs/late in games) so he doesn't have that legendary defender reputation either.

I can't see him getting in.....

Comparing Taylor to Tippett is silly because Tippett shouldn't even be in. The only reason he got in is because the committee gave him respect for being such a good player on so many lousy teams, Taylor played mostly on winning Dolphins teams.

Until he makes at least ONE game changing play in a playoff game, I say no.

I don't think he 'should' get in. Derrick Thomas still hasn't been accepted and Thomas was a better overall LB than JT. They played the same basic position, Thomas is the guy who revolutionized that 'tweener' type LB/DE pass rushing position. He did it first & he did it better.

Thomas also died tragically in an accident while he was still very young, so you'd think he'd get the sympathy vote. I would vote for Thomas & a BOATLOAD of other players before JT...

I think he should get in the Hall. He was one of the top two or three most dominant pass rushers in the NFL during his prime. He's won defensive player of the year. And, for his position, he was a TD scoring machine.

Well Derrick Thomas finally got voted in this year. I always thought he should be in because he was such a dominating player who often single handedly won games for Kansas City, and really could take over games. He was a guy who had 7 sack games on multiple occasions, which really is incredible. The knock on him was that he wasn't very good away from Arrowhead Stadium, where he fed off the energy of the crowd and took over games. Also the Chiefs never really went very far with Thomas, not to a Super Bowl or anything.

With defenders you almost have to be dominant on the biggest stage, the playoffs and the Super Bowl, to be voted in the HOF. Thats why the Steelers and Cowboys have so many defensive HOF's. Statistically a lot of their guys don't match up with a lot of guys who AREN'T in the HOF, but because they were able to dominate the competition and win Super Bowls they were recognized as the best and voted in.
