Miami Dolphins superstar Jason Taylor has been named Grand Marshal for the March 26 Toyota Indy 300 presented by XM Satellite Radio at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
The standout defensive end will give the command for Danica Patrick, Dan Wheldon, Helio Castroneves and all of the stars to the IRL IndyCar® Series to start their engines for the opening race of the 2006 season. After the race, he will present the winner’s trophy in Gatorade Victory Lane.

“I’m thrilled to serve as Grand Marshal for the Toyota Indy 300 at Homestead-Miami Speedway,†said Taylor. “To have the opportunity to witness some of the best drivers on the planet race side-by-side at over 220 mph in my own backyard is certainly one of the most exciting parts of being associated with a great company like Toyota.â€Â

Taylor’s blue-collar work ethic endears him to the Dolphins’ faithful. The nine-year veteran has started 98 consecutive regular-season games. He led the Dolphins in 2005 with 12 sacks, and he ranks third in the NFL in sacks among active players and is the Dolphins all-time leader in sacks with 92.5.

He was also ranked third on the 2005 team in tackles with 77, which is unusual for a defensive lineman. Only linebackers Zach Thomas and Channing Crowder recorded more stops in 2005. Taylor also ranked seventh in the Dolphins’ roster in scoring  he returned a fumble 85 yards for a touchdown and registered a safety.

“We are honored to have a person of the caliber of Jason Taylor as Grand Marshal for the Toyota Indy 300,†said Homestead-Miami Speedway President Curtis Gray. “While football fans are very familiar with his many accomplishments playing for the Miami Dolphins, we are very impressed with his off-the-field contributions with the Jason Taylor Foundation and his enthusiasm for auto racing.â€Â

A native of the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, area, Taylor, 31, lives in Davie, Florida, with his wife, Katina, their two sons, Isaiah and Mason and daughter, Zoe. He was selected by the Dolphins in the third round of the draft out of the University of Akron,

In July 2004, he established the Jason Taylor Foundation, which has a mission of supporting and creating programs that facilitate the personal growth and empowerment of South Florida’s children in need by focusing on improved health care, education and quality of life.

Maybe the guys at Daytona will call and let him be the GM for a real race one July or February.

IRL is amusing enough when they visit Richmond if I can get a free ticket, but there is no comparison between it and NASCAR (including Busch Series).
