I'm sorry if this sounds stupid, but is Taylor officially a linebacker now? From what I've seen on here everyone talks about him as an outside linebacker. He's listed at DE on nfl.com, espn.com and even the Dolphins official site. I live in PA during football season so I don't get to watch the Dolphins play very often. I can't remember what Taylor was doing during the opening game against Pittsburgh. I'd appreciate if someone could clarify this for me.

Well, he will act as a rush OLB most of the time when we are in our 3-4 scheme. When we are in a 4-3 scheme, he'll act as a DE. I think he will still officially be listed as a DE.

hes an OLB that puts his hand on the ground more then most. other sites still have us running the 4-3, so he will be listed as a DE there.

I would guess by technical terms he's considered the OLB or OE. That means that depending on the defense called is whether he's in a 3 point stance or standing up. The thing is, his role isn't going to change significantly nor is he going to be in coverage as much as Joey will be on the other side...

The dolphins play a combination of a 4-3 and a 3-4 defense, probably playing a 3-4 more snaps than the 4-3 (something like 60% or so of the snaps). JT is so special because he is can play with his hand down as a 4-3 end and be dominant and disruptive, but can also play standing up as an outside linebacker in our 3-4 which often requires him to drop back in coverage as well as rush the passer. So the answer is both...

No. Not stupid at all.

He's an elephant. He'll be officially listed as a DE, but he is actually a 4-3 DE/3-4 OLB.
