Hear me out on this one. Matt Ryan is going to be the number one pick (not by us tho). and Jason Taylor is going to be a Miami Dolphin.

I was thinking about Joey Porter and how long he might end up on the team, when I came across his numbers that Clumpy posted. I believe in order to cut Porter it wouls cost us 17.6 million this year based on this info. It got me thinking about the whole situation with Taylor, Pace, Porter, and our number one pick...... here's what I came up with...

$12 million signing bonus/5 yrs = $2.4 million proration per year

If he did have an $8 million roster bonus, his 2008 cap number would be $15.2 million

I have been trying to find out the breakdown for months but my "insider" who helps me with numbers hasn't replied to this request :(

Also, if he really did have an $8 million roster bonus, I would suspect he would be part of the rebuilding process and cut or traded

However, another possibility is that the $8 million is an option payment and is amortized at $2 million/year......if this were the case: 4.8 + 2 + 2.4 = $9.2 million cap hit

which seems to make the most sense otherwise that eight million would be on this years cap and (of the 15.2 total) and we couldnt possibly have had 44 million in cap space according to the NFLPA. seems most likely it is prorated and if we wanted to cut the guy at any time it would cost us 4.4 million per year left on the contract at this point it would cost us 17.6 million!!!!! next year 13.2 following year 8.8.

We have Joey Porter for at least the next two years folks, and there no doubt about it!!

However, (to contradict myself and speculate) it would be possible since we do have some cap space if Bill really wasn't convinced Porter could be part of the rebuilding that this might be, in part, a reason to get rid of Taylor. The reason being Taylor saves about 5 million in cap space I believe if traded, which would at least make it possible to cut Porter loose and still be ok this year and SWARMING in cap space next year.

I don't see how this makes sense though. We don't have ANYBODY on the roster that's proven they can provide a pass rush from the outside besides Taylor and Porter, and to cut them both loose would be defensive suicide, since the defense is built on the outside pass rush. Just don't see how that can be in the plans. In fact, I can't see now that we couldn't land Pace how it would even make sense to allow Taylor to go.

THo either one of them on the move would certainly tip our hand in the draft after you consider the possiblities, and the loss of Pace. (which also would explain why Parcells was adamant in his denials Taylor was on the move). I believe if Pace had signed Taylor was on the move and we were listening to offers tho not soliciting them. At this point I believe he stays in Miami unless we get an outrageous offer (more than just a number 1 pick)

As long as Ryan continues to distinguish himself (ie proday) as the clear cut number one guy, I think Parcells ends up trading that pick to either Kansas City, Atlanta, Baltimore, or possibly the Jets. I think there are some teams at the top that when the time comes might decide they have to get their franchise guy, and if somebody besides Atlanta decides they want a QB, Atlanta will be forced to trade to get him.

Number three is the perfect spot for us to move as well, because it ensures the fact that we either get Gholston or Howies boy, the two guys, i believe, Parcells has coveted all along

Nice read..... I agree completely with everything here, especially the last part.

i got no problem with porter here. he seemed to get the grasp of the defense and then balled the second half of the season. im looking forward to this year when he'll actually be used right.

You are right, the Porter deal was a bad one ... and the only way out of it would be to trade him ... cutting / releasing him is not really a realistic option ....

Agree that he will be here no less than through '09 ...

If we trade JT, I'm ok with trading Porter also, and it doesn't have to be for much. The reasoning is that I don't think he's going to get much done without JT's play on the other side. Overpaying for him doesn't help with trying to trade him, however, so that's why the compensation wouldn't be ideal.

Should we keep JT, and he wants to play here in '08, then I'm ok keeping Porter because he won't have to do it all himself--which I don't believe he can do, anyway. With a guy like JT on the team Porter can play within his abilities and help us out. Without JT, it wouldn't take much for an opponent to game plan around Porter and poof--he's invisible.

K.C. aint interested in the first overall pick. I guarantee you they wont trade up for it... and if for some reason they did, it would be for Jake Long. THey still believe in Croyle.

Well I don't see KC trading up for Jake Long. There are other tackles available. Although I tend to agree with you on Croyle - he has been there two years now, and they TRIED to make him the guy there last year. He didn't really show much, and they must not have thought the world of him coming out of college cause they drafted him in the third round - which just means they wanted a quarterback to develop and see what he can turn into. While I don't think the Jets or the Chiefs necessarily being that team (certainly in both cases - the coaching staffs of both teams could perhaps buy themselves another season if the perception was there that they have a quarterback of the future in place) Both staffs hotseat has got to be at least luke-warm. Baltimore is a real possibility.

My whole point to the trade is simply - WE KNOW Atlanta has to have Matt Ryan pegged as their guy...because they have been through a media nightmare with the resignation of Petrino and the Vick episode - they HAVE to have something to sell to the fans. A franchise QB does that instantly. All Miami needs is interest from ONE other team - doesnt matter who it is. If Atlanta thought there is even a chance we might take him or trade the pick (and I doubt think there is any doubt on either point) they have to trade up for him. We could do just what San Diego did for crying out loud - call their bluff. OK we have your guy we picked him....now come get him....seems to me that trade worked out pretty good for NY.

I really believe in the end Atlanta picks first and we end up with Vernon Gholston (perhaps Chris Long - but I think Gholston) and a 2nd and 4th or a 2nd and a second next year or DeAngelo Hall...something of this nature.

This trade allows us to address our three biggest needs essentially before the first round is over. OLB (passrush) LT (or RT as the case may be) and CB. Those positions along with QB are considered the most important on the field.

Can you imagine if we had Gholston, Taylor, Porter, Will Allen, DeAngelo Hall (or Cromartie etc), along with the size we already have up front and perhaps Eugene Wilson (though some combo of Hill, Bell, and Allen will be ok). I'm sorry, our defense is already going to be pretty formidable. That is at least a top 15 unit that will create turnovers. With no glaring holes.

On offense, the line is already better than it was last year as long as the tackle spot is addressed (which it will be). Our receivers are already better (Wilfork and Ginn are a great compliment). Im sure TE will be adressed somehow. Ronnie or Ricky are two pretty damn good options (hopefully one of them can stay healthy/recover). With this offense around him and an emphasis on running the ball (Wilfork signing indicates this) - I love his pickup cause he is a red zone threat as well as a good blocker). Beck should have a decent surrounding cast.

Special teams have been upgraded. This team wound have as much depth as Parcells would like, and it needs another year of roster turnover. But it is possible if this team stays healthy and comes together, that we could have a pretty good season. I would certainly prefer the young talent we have or will have over quite a few teams (the Jets and Bills for instance).
