This could be an intersting story this year, dude definitely has the talent if he keeps his weight down, Pete Johnson type of talent.

Other nuggets from the depth chart release:

  • Marcus Thigpen is listed as the first-team kick returner, ahead of Lamar Miller, Steve Slaton and finally Clyde Gates, who did the job last year.
  • Davone Bess is the first-team punt returner ahead of Thigpen, Gates and Rishard Matthews.
  • Chris Clemons is ahead of Jimmy Wilson at safety.
  • Roberto Wallace is listed fourth-team right now.
  • Jorvorskie Lane is listed first-team fullback.
  • The starting wide receivers are Legedu Naanee and Chad Johnson.
  • Jamaal Westerman, something of a (some) media darling, is listed third-team behind Cameron Wake and Olivier Vernon.

Hmm, if Thigpen wins the KR and possibly PR jobs, he sure crowds that backfield.

Bush, Thomas, and Miller are locks. Thigpen would be the 4th, which means bye bye Slaton, though the coaching staff likes him.

If Gates doesn't win the KR job, I don't see him making this squad. It will be interesting when Philbin wants to cut Ireland's 4th round pick from last season.

My guess is that Miller wins the KR job and it wouldn't surprise me to see Bush returning a fair share of punts. I'm still wondering about Bess and now Hartline and how they fit in- as usual I'm in the minority on this one, and that's ok with me. I'm tired of mediocrity, and they pretty much define it. Miller is a threat at KR. Bush is a threat at PR. Bess is a threat at nothing. Hartline's ok, I want to see how he stacks up to the others when he's healthy.

What's going to be key is if we see Thigpen in the slot during the preseason... we know they want to look at miller there, but if they go Thigpen also... then I think it's goodbye to Gates.

Is he a Sproles type player.. ? Will be interesting to see how they use these 2 backs.

I don't think we really need a fullback on the roster. Bring in a reserve olineman if we need more beef.

Greenbay had a kid playing fb, lb and special teams not to mention he contributed on all three! Can we find one of those?

Wow, Pete Johnson?! You are old school for real. I used to love the elephant backfield with him and Andra Franklin.

Is Thomas a lock? By all accounts he is not doing too well thus far and really doesnt fit the offense. Could he be dealt?

don't sleep on the cadet kid if he gets let go in new orleans as the potential 4th back...saints got a crowded backfield and either he or chris ivory is coming free at final cuts

A guy who has done absolutely Nothing since leaving college, except get fat, making the roster, let alone no.1 on the depth chart, has to be the biggest news.

Intriguing. Interested to see what he brings.

Seriously. Bess has no business returning punts.

I would rather have Cadette over Daniel Thomas. He plays with toughness.
Getting rid of Thomas would doom the wildcat in Miami..

Where did this guy Javorskie Lane come from. With a name like that it sound like a Green Bay guy..

I agree with you but GB really liked their FBs. They had 3 or 4 FBs on the roster.

Lane was a damn good powerback at A&M under Dennis Franchione scoring 44 TDs during his first 3 seasons while rushing for 595, 725, and 780 yards. When Sherman became the HC at A&M he switched Lane to FB right away (and I mean literally right away, he told Lane he would be FB before Sherman's introduction PC). So Lane went from having 119, 166, and 169 carries his first 3 seasons at College Station (and after his junior year, he was getting some Heisman hype) to 35 carries as a senior.

He has slimmed down significantly though since college. He was about 280 and is now down to about 258. If he makes the team, he's got a place. While Sherman may have cut his production at A&M he did help him learn how to use his size. Lane was a classic case of power back who thinks he is a scat back. Yeah he was hard to bring down in college due to his size but he he got too cute with his runs.

as for Thigpen, he was a pretty good return man in college and in the CFL. If he makes the team as a return specialist good for him.
