Jaws with Micheal Irvin > excellent discussion

I like the point they made about Wake.

When our team is having big troubles with the pass rush, and our best pass rusher is Wake, it's very odd that they would drop Wake 18 times into pass coverage. LOL

Makes me suspect about Nolan's motives, or having ulterior motives at that.

/sighs

Agreed about Wake.
Just love that old school NFL intro music..

I could not disagree more with Irvin and a somewhat agreeing Jaws about hiring an innovative offensive coach. Cam Cameron and Tony Sparano have numbed me to the idea of going Irvin's route.

This team needs a coach with credibility and most of all create a culture of mental toughness. This franchise needs a culture change FIRST. Then we can talk about things like offensive innovation and 3-4 or 4-3 defense...

In Wake's defense, its not always predetermined if he will rush the QB or pass defend. It could depend on where the TE or RB lines up which determines his role in the play.

I think an innovative offensive coach is exactly what they need to hire. Tony Sparano is anything but an innovative offensive coach. Cam Cameron came from a strong offensive background, but he was already a failed head coach at the college level. That should have been enough for them to not hire him.

Miami needs a shake up in the overall organizational philosophy that has been in place for 15 years now. Get rid of this defense first, run the ball, and manage the game mindset that focuses on ball control and time of possession on offense. They need fresher, newer ideas. Spread things out. Run the no huddle. Focus on speed and skill instead of size and power. Don't forget about defense, but don't make it the crux of your philosophy.

Also, Cam isn't exactly what I call innovative. Air Coryell was innovative in the 1970s, but it is basically the same system now that it was in the '80s.

I want someone who will embrace the principles of the college spread, because that's what the college game is giving to the NFL at this time. I want someone that will come in and shake things up the way Chip Kelly did at Oregon, Urban Meyer did at Florida, and Dan Mullen has done at Mississippi State.

They did it most of the preseason. I even created a post titled "did you notice" wake was down field an awful lot. Some genius said "Nolan playing a vanilla defense in the preseason". I didn't believe it then and its obvious now why Nolan will be gone next season.

After listening to the clip, I totally agree with both Michael Irvin and Jaws on this.

At one point, I didn't believe this, but the game is clearly changing. This is no longer a game that is about defense and running the ball. This is a game that is about spreading the field and creating space for playmakers to make plays.

I'm glad Michael brought up Rob Chudzinski, because he is definitely a guy that would be on my radar. Plus, he has ties to the Miami area to boot. What he has done with Cam Newton is impressive. He has incorporated Cam in the running game and has given him easy reads to make in the passing game. Like Michael said, they are running a lot of mirror routes where he has to read either half the field or read the safety. He is still missing some reads, but the guy is playing a lot better than I would have ever thought he could. I credit a lot of that to the innovative Rob Chudzinski. I'm glad to see that he isn't afraid to empty the backfield and go 5 wide while using Cam as the running back. When you can incorporate the quarterback in the running game, it gives you a numbers advantage. Not every running quarterback can do this. Cam can, and this is why I'm so interested in seeing if John Fox in Denver will allow his OC to use the spread and go empty backfield with Tim Tebow. I think Denver will explode with some wins if they do, because I appreaciate Tebow's ability and intangibles more than I do Newton's.

Considering that it is very, very likely that we will be drafting a quarterback high in this draft, whether it is Andrew Luck, Landry Jones, Matt Barkley, or Robert Griffin, I want an innovative offensive mind that embraces these college spread concepts.

I hear ya man. I just really question why he should be doing pass coverage, especially in a scenario against santonio holmes, when we have no other capable rushers.

I remember when Jason got the most sacks in the league, when we got creative and moved him around the line a lot to attack different gaps- mainly to create confusion and create more sacks.

Nolan, instead of being creative with his sack machine to generate qb pressure, he is oddly being creative using his sack machine for pass coverage.

Seriously what if Nolan stacked JT and Wake on the same side just a few times? I'm sure they could create some havok with some twists and stunts together.

Thought that part was especially interesting.

It is SOOOOO hard to Listen to M Irvin, sometime he acts like a little kid.

In this interview they said Wake was back in coverage 18 times including on the Holmes TD.
Who the heck was rushing the passer ? No one that's who.

Yeah Irvin has his faults but he gets the best interviews. He has Golden every week for Canes fans and all the old U players go on that show. They seem to loosen up and talk how they do in real life not just in front of a camera. You may need an interpreter but it's good stuff.

I'm convinced Nolan has thrown in the towel. His play calls and schemes are coming off just as lackadaisical as Henning's were in his final stint.

He doesn't know what to do. They didn't get a real pass rusher to help Cameron out...JT just sucks...he really needs to hang it up!!! Nolan is reaching for staws right now with the crap talent he has been provided.

That being said...if dropping Cameron in coverage for a lousy zone blitz is his answer...he needs to hang it up too...
