DAVIE, Fla. -- Miami Dolphins rookie right tackle Ja'Wuan James has reason to cringe before every training camp practice. His daily assignment: Try to keep Dolphins Pro Bowl defensive end Cameron Wake off quarterback Ryan Tannehill.
It's a brutal assignment for any offensive tackle. But that is especially the case for James, who is going through his first NFL training camp as Miami's No. 19 overall pick this past May. The Dolphins are putting James to the test right away by plugging him into the starting lineup and having him face Wake in every practice.
Wake, as expected, is winning most of those early battles. But James and the Dolphins see the long-term benefits to the rookie's early struggles against Wake.
"I love it because I’m a competitor," James said of his battles with the veteran defensive end. “He’s a great player and he’s going to get me better. As long as I keep going as hard as I can against him, these constant reps we have, it’s going to get me ready for what I’m going to see in the season.”
Things got particularly one-sided on Saturday. Wake batted a pass and got past James to sack Tannehill in one team session. Later that practice, Wake blew up James with a bull rush in one-on-one drills to complete a tough day for the rookie. Wake also beat James for another Tannehill sack on Sunday.
The goal is to get James as ready as possible for opposing defensive ends he will face in the regular season.
“He practices hard,” Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin said of Wake. “I think the one thing I really appreciate about Cam Wake is -- obviously you want the performance and production on game day -- but he does a great job in practice.”
Wake is 32-years old, which is a full decade older than James (22). Wake has three Pro Bowls on his résumé and one of the top pass-rushers in the AFC.
It shows good leadership on Wake’s behalf to give James a strong look in practice daily and pull the rookie to the side afterwards to provide occasional words of wisdom.
“After practice he’ll be like, ‘Hey, I’ve got your hands up here, you need to do this here,’” James said of Wake. “Or I’ll ask him something. But he does a good job of schooling me, trying to teach me the right thing. But when it’s in between the lines we’re going at it.”

I believe James will be a very good player and that this will only speed up the learning curve having to battle Wake every day in practice.

Not sure if "very good" is how I see James, especially not the first year. I would settle for decent starter by year 2. I expect his rookie year to look much like Clabo did last year, without the very good finish.

Going against can wake will definitely speed up the procress for getting James ready for the season, no better way to get a guy prepared for what he's gonna see than having him go up against one of the best def ends in the league every snap in practice.

I like that Wake is coahing him up.

Going against the best can only make you maximize your potential. As long as you have the drive and work ethic. I think everybody we drafted this year has that in common. Good work ethics

It didn't work for Martin a few years ago, since Martin has the intestinal fortitude of a gnat (was really pulling for him too...sucked everything went down like it did)...James is a completely different monster.

As always we rely on adjustments. If Dion Jordan isn't learning a values lesson then Lamar Miller is talking to LeSean McCoy and Ju'Waun James is hoping that opponents won't abuse him as badly as Cameron Wake apparently has.

Why can't a collegian show up as immediately great, minus adjustments? The sample size shouldn't be absolute zero. I remember Jake Scott and Larry Csonka and many others.

Maybe Landry. I'll root for Landry. He's working with Lazor, isn't he? Another adjuster. Then we start adjusting the stadium.

Seriously, why can't rookies just come in and be top 5 at their position? Really shouldn't be that hard at all.

I agree. I think a lot of the time we see first round picks as guys who will have an immediate impact and do great. It's easy to fall into that trap of thinking we plug in a first rounder and the position is solved. I really doubt James does that. He was more like a second rounder anyway and I think we reached for a need. I'm not criticizing, I just think we should not expect him to be anything more than serviceable for now, and hope he becomes solid after some experience. Even most first rounders need time anyway; we just remember the rare ones who start off great.

Wow... bad analysis. He can't be as bad as Clabo... I mean can't like not possible. Clabo was horrific, he threw a few "oh-shoot" blocks a game. I doubt James will be that bad, think he'll be much better than that.

you have a problem with the stadium?!?!? why don't you bring it up once in a while?

:bobdole: How many times are you going to let us know you hate the stadium between now and the season starts. My under/over would be 9.5. Adjust accordingly.
