The Dolphins lack the resources to invest in both the wide receiver and running back positions under the new regime. Adam Gase’s penchant for running the football means losing Lamar Miller would be a blow to the offense, but perhaps not a crippling one. Jay Ajayi’s nine-game stretch to close out 2015 offers serious hope that at least part of the solution is already on the roster. Ajayi fell all the way to the fifth round in last year’s draft, but looked like an explosive playmaker in his 49 carries. Overall, he picked up 187 yards from those carries and, while the 3.8 yards per carry average looks distinctly average, the 3.3 yards per carry average after contact and 12 broken tackles do not. To put those numbers in perspective, Miller averaged only 2.8 yards after contact per attempt, and broke just 28 tackles in 194 rushes. Amongst backs with a minimum of 50 touches, only Dion Lewis surpassed Ajayi’s 83.7 elusive rating, and only Spencer Ware and Le’Veon Bell recorded a superior yards-after-contact average. Ajayi will have to prove his talent with an increased workload, but the early signs are incredibly promising for the Dolphins

Ajayi's 49 carries is not a lot to go on but I do agree with this PFF writer that he did flash much better than his 3.8 average.

The line has the biggest impact on the running game.

Even if we lose Miller, a fixed line will increase our rushing attack. (Can't really get much worse, can it?)

Darren Disappointment McFadden was 4th in the league, for rushing yards, and that includes when he was merely a depth guy to start the season. He ran behind one of the best lines in the league.
Properly build the line, and just keep on drafting backs in the mid rounds.

cool article, and applies stats to what I think a lot of dolfans saw watching jay play....

You could see from Ajayi's runs I. Preseason he has that extra special something. Give him the ball 20 times a game and I think we'd have something special.

You have to take into account where the RB makes the defender flat out miss, which Miller is top 5 iirc... So when taken into context, wether the guy breaks tackle or simply avoids them, as long as the ypc is decent, your fine... Miller's ypc is top 10 so...

This. So many times we get caught up in Miller getting tackled we forget how he avoids them and his YPC. I'd much rather a RB that gets 5ypc than one that gets 3.5 and I don't give a **** how they get them.

Miller's a good back but I wouldn't lose sleep if we have Ajayi a shot at being the featured back. Bring in a veteran to back him up and we're golden. At the end of the day we're only going as far as the line will carry us
