he Dolphins had their first day of tackling at training camp on Monday and one of their key offensive players had to leave the session early.

Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports that running back Jay Ajayi walked off the field with trainers after getting his “bell rung” during the session. Salguero adds that the trainers took Ajayi’s helmet away from him as they went for further evaluation.

Reports from the Dolphins practice had Ajayi taking big hits from safety T.J. McDonald and linebacker Lawrence Timmons over the course of the session.

There’s been no official update on Ajayi’s status from the team at this point, but running back Kenyan Drake said that he thinks Ajayi will “be back sooner rather than later.” Given where we are in the calendar, the Dolphins will likely take their time to make sure that all is well before throwing Ajayi back into the mix.

UPDATE 11:19 a.m. ET: Dolphins coach Adam Gase said that Ajayi is being evaluated for a concussion.

Is it necessary for Ajayi to be taking big hits this early in camp? It's a long season and RB's get beat up as it is not to mention what the Dolphins have in store for him. Maybe we need to take it easy on him right now.

agree. no more hits this preseason.. i want him to get 300 carries this year (at least)

Its dumb when you have your number one running back taking hits like these so early in camp.

I would understand if its a rookie trying to make the team but not you first string rb.

Yes stupid is as stupid does. Bad call for Gase here if the "hits" have been plentiful.

i agree with needing to hit. if ajayi is evaluated and doesn't have a concussion, i'm cool with what they're doing. if he does have a concussion, that's too much contact on your own teammate.

I have no problem with it. On top of that, isn't it interesting that the 2 guys who were ringing him up are brand new? Nice to hear we are getting defenders who put an exclamation mark on hits. I don't want anything bad to happen to JA, and I'm sure they'll be more careful moving forward, but this isn't all bad news.
