The Dolphins pursued a few veteran running backs during free agency, but none of them wound up joining the team’s roster which makes third-round pick Kenyan Drake the only significant addition to the backfield this offseason.
It also opened the door wide for Jay Ajayi to grab the feature back role in Miami this season. Ajayi says he is doing all he can to race through it and grab the job that Lamar Miller left available when he signed with the Texans.
“I’ve been excited since I found out that Lamar was going to be moving on and that the position would be available,” Ajayi said, via the team’s website. “I’ve just been pushing myself through this offseason to prepare myself to have a great sophomore season. I was able to get a lot of opportunities last year when I finally started playing, and I felt comfortable. Now, I’m ready to elevate my game to a new level this season.”

Did miller move on because he knew ajayi was on his heels? Maybe.

I actually expect him to play really well. My main concern is just durability with his previous injuries and aggressive running style. Definitley has some of that Knowshon to him

who ever envisioned ajayi becoming our solid number one back (especially so quickly)?

how phenomenal if it comes to pass, and he emerges as a top echelon back for us.

there definitely seems to be a medical shelf life on him. Hopefully a few seasons, enough for us to get someone else

RB is a position that seems to have a very defined shelf life regardless of health...Ajayi is shorter, but if we 3 years...call it a win.

I seen zero to get excited about last year. I saw an erratic running back that lacked vision and ran hard mostly into the back of our linemen. Don't get me wrong, I hope he does well....but I am not excited from what I saw last year.

Ajayi staying healthy has to be one of the biggest concerns of the season. He's not a break-away threat like Lamar Miller was. So he won't have that kind of YPA. I like Ajayi as a grinder. He's fine in a stable of backs. But the dimension Miller brought is tough to replace. Drake is not nearly as rugged running between the tackles as Lamar was, until the kid proves otherwise. If Ajayi gets hurt, it looks terrible. 23 needs to be on the field, carrying the football, grinding away.

Really you saw zero to get excited about...
i am not as big on the kid as most, i saw him get a lot of carries for nothing..
but he shower he can break off some nice long runs, run through contact and catch the ball...i wouldnt call that zero

Taking into consideration that he broke a rib and missed snaps and came in week 8, he showed flashes but we lost Ja-Wuan James just as Ajayi started getting just a few snaps a game. That left the make-shift line with two good players out of 5 with the other 3 being pretty bad. Jason Fox, Dallas Thomas and Billy Turner.

He averaged about 6 attempts per game. For me, I saw great quickness but perhaps not the decisiveness needed. He still managed to break a few nice runs. That's all to be expected for a rookie who only got 49 attempts to get used to NFL speed, scheme, etc. He will be more comfortable in his role this year and many RB's need more attempts to get in a groove.

Also take into consideration that Lamar Miller had similar production as a rookie with only 50 rushing attempts. He had a better ypc average but he also had better guards to go along with Pouncey and Jake Long. The only true weak point on that squad was Jon Martin.

He may never be Todd Gurley but he can be Devontae Freeman. He put up similar numbers as a rookie but had over 1k and 11 td's in his second year in 13 games.

I did.

Then you were watching someone else as he was just the opposite, especially since he hardly got enough carries to get in a rhythem like rb's need and he shared the load with the starter. Plus not playing for more than half a season. Your not going to get 1400 yds with that. Your take on his vision couldnt be more wrong.
