Will Jay be used (mostly) as a third down back?

No. Lamar Miller & Jay Ajayi will be the 1st & 2nd down backs. Damien Williams will be the 3rd down back.

my gut is they eventually split entire series (not alternating series, just a few series for one, then a few series for the other), then going with the hot hand. if ajayi proves capable in short yardage, he will be in all short yardage, goal line, and maybe even 4 minute situations.

No, I think he will platoon with Miller. They will likely alternate series, but I could see Ajayi being the 3rd down, short yardage and 4th quarter run out the clock back.. His playing time will primarily come down to ball security. If he holds onto the ball well, he has the pass pro, short yardage, and receiving skills to do what Knowshown Moreno did in our offense during his brief appearance. He will not be a bell cow back, because we want coverage for his knee issue. But, he has a chance to take the bulk of the meaningful carries.

I think they'll just spell each other when necessary so they both remain fresh.

This sounds about right (or, what Should happen). I don't see him playing every 3rd-down, maybe like Digital said, alternate per series, and then come in as the alt. for goal-line and change-of-pace. I can see Ayaji getting a lot of receiving duty if the coverage opens up, since he's good at pass-catching. We'll have so many targets running around in the intermediate zones, Cameron, Sims, Landry, Parker, Jennings, etc. I'm sure he and Williams can get open and be some solid safety valves for Tannehill.

as of now... i would vision Ajayi as more of a 2nd/3rd short down type back as well as one that will keep Miller fresh by taking some series off and on too.

Miller i believe will still be eyed on third downs and hopefully improved... he has ability, just needs to be able to catch and go with the ball better... needs to definitely improve in that aspect. But yes, Ajayi would also be in the mix for 3rd down and longer too. he is an awful blocker though as of now.

i am saying this just from what i would think as of now... but they have camp to prove and do!!! long time still till season, lots can change.

here's Jay on WQAM with Kelly

One thing i liked was when he was asked what vets he's is learning the most from he mentioned Jennings. Man i'm glad he's here to help the younger guys and maybe even catch a few passes. Jay sounds ready to prove all the people wrong that are concerned about his knee.

he does seem like a kid ready towork hard and prove himself... i love himas well as basically all the kids we brought in. seem like good group or craniums!!!

and the jennings comment i loved too. i said all through the months i didnt want and WR FA (and SO GLAD we didnt sign anyone)... but when Jennings was released wouldnt mind bringing him in due to he would be understandable of his role coming in here, plus is a great guy, hard worker, and will help teach and work with our youth!!! i guess it is showing already!!!

I can't wait to see both Miller and ajayi in the backfield at the same time! Gonna be a tough cover for those lbs!! I'm very hopeful for Jay ajayi. Which reminds me I met this lady at the local gas station that said her daughter was great friends with him at bsu and how she was really a big dolphins fan now! I'm in cali and it was music to my ears!

Jay Ajayi said he can't wait to play San Diego cause they passed him up in the draft and he's circled the date already. lol.
