Jay Gruden (born March 4, 1967) is an American football coach and former quarterback. He is currently the offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals and was formerly the head coach of the Florida Tuskers of the United Football League. Gruden is also the brother of former Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach and current Monday Night Football analyst Jon Gruden.

Gruden began his coaching career as the offensive coordinator for the Nashville Kats in 1997. Then, in 1998, he became head coach of the Orlando Predators, the main rival of the Tampa Bay Storm. He won ArenaBowl titles in 1998 and 2000 as head coach. He un-retired and resumed playing in 2002, this time for the Predators, but retired again and returned to head coaching when his replacement, Fran Papasedero, died after the 2003 season.

From 2002 to 2008 he also served as an offensive assistant for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the National Football League under his brother, head coach Jon Gruden. He left after Jon was fired following the 2008 season.
In 2009, while the Predators were on hiatus prior to the folding of the AFL, he was selected to be head coach Jim Haslett's offensive coordinator for the Florida Tuskers of the United Football League. As part of his contract, he was not permitted to remain head coach of the Predators. Instead, former Preds quarterback Pat O'Hara, who led the team to the two ArenaBowls it won when Gruden was head coach, was hired in his place.
In 2010, he was named head coach of the Tuskers following Haslett's departure to join Mike Shanahan's staff with the Washington Redskins.
Gruden was hired as the offensive coordinator for the Cincinnati Bengals on February 3, 2011.

If Jay Gruden didn't have the same last name as Jon Gruden, nobody would know who he is or care.

I'm sure if Jon isn't coming back to coaching, he will put in a word for his brother. Jon obviously likes Miami but I think his TV job has made him too comfortable.

Yea, coaching isnt hereditary. Just ask the Ryans.
Not only that, but I think you have to ask yourself how many other coaches we're considering who have qualifications similar to Jay Gruden's.

Not many, if any.

So I have to attribute the interest in Jay Gruden to his last name.

I'm not too sure about that. What he's doing with the Bengals is impressive and there's at least one reporter in Orlando who has been banging the drum for him for years, dating back to his time as an Arena League HC.

Indubitably sir.

IMO, Jay Gruden is being talked about for the same reasons as Chudzinski. They are offensive coordinators who have done phenomenal jobs with rookie QBs this season.

Grew up in Orlando and have been around to watch him not only play but coach as well. He’s got just as much fire in him as his brother and was a great player and a really good coach. I would not be against this move at all. I know that there are others to consider and if they should opt not to Join us down here in Miami, Jay would be a great coach to look at as an up and coming coach with a great brother to lend a bit of brotherly advice!! Just a thought.

People on this site don't want up and coming coaches, ever. Guys, these coaches need to start SOMEWHERE. What do you guys want to do, get the corpse of Lombardi here just to avoid an up and coming coach? Cowher and Jon are RETIRED. They're done. They're proven, but they're done. Time to give other coaches a chance.

The Bengals are 23rd in the league in total offense.

If this guy's name was John Smith, would anyone know of him?

Quite a few people wanted Cam Cameron simply because he was supposedly the next best thing.

Very easy to say coaches like Cowher, Gruden, and Fischer are "done" and "time to give other coaches a chance" when your livelihood isn't riding on the decision.

I have a feeling that very few if any here would cast aside the likes of Cowher, Gruden, and Fischer in favor of an unproven head coach if their paycheck actually depended on it.

Easy to champion Jay Gruden or "other coaches" when the extent of your involvement in the decision is typing their names into an internet message board.

When you stand to go jobless for choosing Jay Gruden over Cowher, Jon Gruden, or Jeff Fischer, let me know.
