If you’re still reeling from the Dolphins offensive performance Saturday against Pittsburgh, this should put a smile back on your face: During Tuesday’s seven-on-seven drills, Saban put a group of players on the field that truly revealed how much individual potential this team has on offense. Get this. Ricky Williams in the backfield. Ronnie Brown in the slot. Randy McMichael, Bryan Gilmore and David Boston lined up wide in a spread formation. Not a bad combination, is it? And if you replace Boston or Gilmore with Chris Chambers, the lineup becomes even more potent. Now, if only the Dolphins could get its offensive line in order and its quarterback situation squared away, they’d be onto something. Watching this group lined up, though, was probably the most impressive group I had seen on the field at once since I arrived in Davie at the start of the month. Maybe it was simply because Brown and Williams were on the field at once – whatever the reason, it was pretty cool.
Saban only kept that specific group on the field for one play, which resulted in a short pass to McMichael on a curl route. But the potential of having three Pro Bowlers, a No. 2 overall Draft pick, and McMichael on the field at once just seemed especially neat. Not to mention, when Ricky returns from his suspension, what will it be like to have two running backs as talented as Brown and Williams on the field at the same time? Between Brown’s great hands and Williams’ explosive speed, Saban should and will surely find a way to make it happen.
