Jeff Darlington's Monday camp report

Sounds like positive stuff all-round.

WR Derek Hagan, the team's third-round pick, has shown precise route running – better than expected out of a rookie his third day in camp. His hands have also been better than advertised, since he took quite a bit of criticism following this year's Senior Bowl when he dropped a few easy passes....

The first-team offense had two nice pass connections during the evening workout – both from QB Daunte Culpepper to WR Chris Chambers. On the first, although Chambers was ruled out of bounds, Culpepper laid a brilliant pass as Chambers tip-toed the sideline for a nice grab. On the other completion, Culpepper hit Chambers for a 25-yard gain. Our one question: Why was LB Zach Thomas the one covering Chambers on the play?...

It certainly appears like Culpepper is starting to feel more like the leader of this team than a newcomer. Anytime the second-string offense was on the field during team drills, Culpepper worked the sideline to talk to teammates. He even played the disciplinarian at one point, hollering, "Sideline! Sideline!" when too many people crept over the line onto the field....

Interesting Vick is seeing some reps at QB... If he can catch on as a returner/wr, it would be a nice luxury to have an extra qb. I can also see the slash-like trick plays now that we have mularky. We'll see what happens...

*edit-- on 2nd thought, it makes sense hes getting qb reps since we released Holland. Guess that works out for Vick. He get more opp to show his stuff

I'm a little psyched by the continued reports of Hagan's strong showing.

I can only ask...what in sam hell happened at the senior bowl and combine! I mean the dude looked like that little stone-handed kid in Little Giants that put gobs of tar stick'em on his hands to try and catch the ball at the end, and he ends up sticking his hands to his jersey flapping them around as he ran. And it wasn't just the game, it was the practices too. Constant reports of disappointing showing from Hagan.

I mean I'll admit, the quickness and the route running are not surprising, neither is the ability to find the soft spots in the zone. The one thing I didn't think he could do though was catch the damn ball. Evidently I was wrong.

Oh you just haven't seen me admit my wrongedness in the past but I've definitely owned up.

Which is why I think it's smarter (and apparently so does Nick) to base scouting on the entire career, not just one combine or game. It works both ways; how many times have we seen a mid round guy become the flavor of the month because of a good combine.

Hagan was the PAC-10's all-time leading receiver, wasn't he? You don't do that with hands of stone. Combines and workouts are overrated, IMO. Nice to see Hagan erasing those doubts early. Another Crowder-like steal?

Wrongednes...lol. But your a college film buff right? Did he drop everything in college too? Or was he sure handed? Because Darrius Thompson looked like Michael Irvin in camp, too.

I think the Senior Bowl week was an anomaly for Hagen. During his entire career at Arizona he was known as the guy who could always make the catch. You don't get to be the career receiving leader of the Pac-10 by dropping lots of balls. My belief is he will turn out to be a great receiver for the Fins!:D

I dont have films of Az State. My first and only glimpse of him as a player was the Senior Bowl and Combine.

But, I did have access to plenty of film review of his work at Az State. I was fully aware of his relatively few drops at ASU. He did have a few high profile drops, though.

I'm not convinced the drops are gone. If it was just the Senior Bowl game, fine, bad day everyone has them. But, it was also the week of practice, plus the Combine. And by Combine, I hope you realize I'm referring to the position drills NOT the 40 time or any of those timed measures.

He dropped balls all week at the Senior Bowl, dropped balls during the game itself, then dropped more balls at the Combine. He has had some high profile drops at ASU although film study showed he caught like 98% of balls thrown to him or something like that (Russ Lande). It wasn't just lapses in concentration at the Senior Bowl and Combine, it was poor catching technique too.

He's a body catcher.

The guy I kept thinking of as he came out was Eddie Kennison...or Rod Smith.
