That was cool...Jeff Ireland answered my question on the live chat...although he gave a cop-out answer.

I asked him - philosophically, which is more important to stopping the passing game, a shut down corner or a disruptive pass rusher?

Obviously, my motive was to get insight to who they might select at #25 if they have their choice of a corner or edge rusher.

He went on about how both are equally as important...blah, blah...

Then Bokamper chimed in and said he liked the pass rushers better.

I agree, think about it: what percentage of sacks are coverage sacks vs. due to a great individual pass rushing effort? I'd say a much greater percentage lies in the latter. Plus, hurried throws, etc. all affect the passing game.

My new mock for this team:

1.) Pass Rusher
2a.) Corner
2b.) Corner

Go fins!

Does this mean you would reach for a player or not select someone who is rated higher because he is not a pass rusher or cornerback?

I would probably go Pass Rusher, Corner, Nose Tackle, Receiver, Inside linebacker, Corner

I agree. I believe a top pass rusher is more disruptive to a good passing game. A good rush makes your corners better.

no of course not...you have to stick to your board. i firmly believe you should always draft bpa.

however, at #25, there is a good chance that the board squeezes in a bit, and there are several players at several positions with similar grades. at that point, you draft for need.

Plain and simple look at the Super Bowl two years ago for your answer. The Giants D-Line dominated the Pats O-Line and frazled Brady which won them the game. The Giants starting corners where Sam Madison (due to injury) and R.W. McQuarters. Both serviceable guys but nothing flashy at that point of their careers. The Giants and Steve Spags decided years before that loading up on the D-Line was key to winning. When you look at Parcells history he has always done the same. But the question than becomes do we have enough talent at the CB position to get by? Are there any rookie corners available that can be game changers? Is Cam Wake the real deal so we could skip on a pass rusher? Only time will tell, but Parcells history along with common knowledge of the NFL says Pass Rusher over Corner.

Both are equally important but the situation dictates the strategy. Front 7 guys usually have more impact in football games. That said we were killed in a few games last year against the best WR's.

You have to be able to at least have a competitive match up with a top shelf WR. Our division is stacked with top talent at WR we will be facing guys like Moss, Owens, and Evans twice this year.

A pass rusher is more important in regards to stopping a passing attack. You probably knew that already and you know Sparano knows that no matter what he says. Its like asking him if Beck blows. You know he knows Beck blows, but he will give you some bs answer.

Pass rusher may be more important but you need good CB's too and the fact is right now we have more guys that can get after the QB than we have guys that can cover even decent WR's. Also IDK about you guys but I saw an aweful lot of quick throws last season that would have gotten off no matter how good of a pass rush we had and WR's were still open. It doesn't matter how good of a pass rush you have if your CB's can't cover 5 yards down the field or defend jump balls that go 20-40 yards down field.

A good pass rush stops passes to all recievers, a shut down corner only stops one guy.

A great pass rush will always make your secondary look good, although i would love to have a complete defense, much like the Bears when they went to the SB in '06

i think a pass rusher is a little more important. if they cant break up a play before a reiceiver gets passed the DB's then you need to worry about a corner.

some one rushing the QB can make a stop, on ALL plays. covering a reciever does nothing against a run.

and pressuring or stopping the QB as quickly and as often as possible keeps your corners, safeties and line backers from running around too much and getting too tired.

So.. he acknowledged your question but he didnt really answer it...
