jeff ireland: ryan tannehills expectations tempered...

sure doesn't sound like ryan's gonna get a fair shake at it in training camp...this is what annoys me about ireland...he'd rather sit on these stop gap vets than at least see what the kids got to offer in training camp by giving him a fair chance...

I believe its Philbin's and Sherman's call to make Tannehill watch and learn for now, and I agree with that decision. I dont think Ireland could make them play Tannehill even if he wanted them to.

Well that didn't take long...The WE HATE IRELAND crowd is back, Oh joy!

Has there ever been a more brilliant pick by a GM than Tannehill at #8?

Fifth year on the job, hasn't done a good job of managing the salary cap, Dolphins ranked #25 for talented players 25 and under by ESPN this week (true or not?), change of coaching staff and drafts a developmental QB with the #8 pick in the draft. If Miami has another losing season chances are Ross will keep Ireland around for season 6 b/c Ireland will be in Ross' ear saying Tannehill is the guy who will turn the team around. Of course, if Miami has a losing season next year as well Ireland can tell Ross it was Tannehill's first year playing and that was to be expected. Truly, a brilliant pick by a GM who imo should have been shown the door along with Sparono.

i'm sure jeff has some say over what goes on and who gets reps etc on that field...no doubt in my mind about that...i hope hard knocks gives us a real glimpse of how tanny is viewed and how much of a look he gets...if he's from the jump at camp the #3 qb i think that's rediculous...make him earn the #3 job if thats the way its gonna go down...only way to earn it is come up goose eggs when you get your chance...

Thats just illogical though, what makes you think Ireland has more say over who starts than Philbin. Come on now

Do we know for sure that this is a Ireland decision?? I mean the way they are handling it seems like the best way to go, IMO. Tell the world AND the kid that they have solid vets to man the spot til he is ready, which probably won't be til mid season or later. Then if he isn't ready by week one you have outs. On the other hand if he looks really good in preseason then you can say, "WOW he is ahead of schedule". Either way it is a win/win.

On the other hand if you label him a day one starter, and he gets behind he is going to push too hard and feel too much pressure. The media is going to say he is a bust, and it is going to make the whole franchise look bad. Again it is MY opinion that it is being handled the correct way. Either way he will be graded by how good he is in two or three years, NOT this year. And if they feel letting him sit is the best way to get him up to speed by year two or three (which I agree with) then that is what they are going to do. One thing IS for sure. Ireland's job depends on it.

It's really hard to get three different QBs a lot of snaps with the ones in TC. I can assure you that if Tannehil starts coming along and looking like he has a chance to start that the decision makers (whoever makes it) will move him up to #2. That would make the whole franchise look better. You can say that is just someone trying to save his job if you want to, but to me it is just making the correct decision.

there's plenty of examples recently of guys playing from the get go and fairing very well...
These QBs that you speak of, how many of them have less than 20 starts as a college QB?? I really am not trying to attack the OP here but RT was more of a potential pick than a production pick, and that is just fine with me. With the way the rookie salary cap is now set up it makes a lot of sense to take a developemental QB now. We have been waiting for 30 years to get the exact right talent at QB, to fall to us when we pick. And because of that we have been without a young talented QB for most of that time. I personally am willing to wait a year or two to get a potentially "special" talent get up to speed rather than spend another 30 years waiting on another Marino.

this board is too predictable...we could have tyler palko the returning veteran and you guys would still say the same thing...anyways i may be jumping the gun here somewhat saying i don't think he'll get a fair shake but i guess i'll find out in a little over a week now...

again though i never said tanny should be given the starting job...i said when your up against david garrard and matt moore you should be given an opportunity...

How are they being predictable? Hoops, you're saying that he's not getting his fair shake. I disagree. I think the cream rises to the top. If he shows he deserves to be the starter, he will start. Ireland wants to win. That's the best way to save your job, not delay the damn kid. There's a logical fallacy in your argument that delaying him will keep Ireland's job, and that is the basic assumption that Moore/Garrard are already better than Tannehill. If that's the case, start them. (well, not both, I'm not sure I want a double QB threat)

irelands not gonna be judged for how garrard or matt moore do...he's gonna sink or swim on tannehill...i don't understand the creme rises to the top stuff though if all the reps you ever get are with the 2nd and 3rd team and few and far between...but again we'll see what looks he gets in training camp...which can't get here fast enough

it kinda reminds me of when cam wake lit up the depth players in the preseason his first year and yet stil rarely saw the field in the regular season even though he was the best pass rusher on the roster from the get go...wake deserved to play more had the most talent and upside yet they came up with some garbage excuse about how he wasn't stout enough against the run and rarely played him...qb obviously is more than physical tools and upside i know that but there's nothing wrong with giving a real talent some looks to see what he's got instead of just putting him in pen #3 on the depth chart from the get go...

as for the starts in college...ie the limited # of starts at qb i can't argue that and it's a good point...it leads to taking a more patient approach...but if the kids not ready you'll find that out before long if you give him the opportunity to show what he's got...there's only so much you can learn carrying around a clip board or in a film study session...you need on the field reps...but maybe in film sessions he's shown he's not ready already...i find that hard to believe already but maybe its the case and maybe some of that will come out on hard knocks...

i really don't believe that the speed of the game and the game in general and the comfort with what you are seeing etc at the los gets better if you're not getting snaps in camp...and you're not gonna develop chemistry with your skill position players and oline etc running with camp bodies...

I think we could agree that Tannehill isn't on the same level (coming out of college) as Luck or RGIII. Who else are those teams going to start?

Sure, he could step in and be a rookie wonder, which would be fantastic. But what happens if he steps in there and becomes a Blaine Gabbert, his career might just be ruined.

tannehills not gonna look like gabbert...cause tannehills not scared to death of contact...i wouldn't worry about that...that's one red flag we aren't gonna have...if he plays too early i think what you would see is him struggle to dx coverage and hold onto the ball too long also failure to recognize or account for uncovered blitzers and set up his protections as well as throw some balls into coverage because of a lack of recognition and probably some general not being on the same page as his skill position players...

but film study is only gonna take you so far with any of that...you're either gonna show you got it or eventually you're gonna show you don't...you can try to delay it as long as you want but there comes a time where you either **** or get off the pot...
