Jeff Ireland speaks about Day 1

incredibly insightful read. Very surprised that he said he could see Pat White as an NFL QB and i agree with him. Looking at our history with QB's (Ray Lucas anyone?), i think it's important to have options like he said, you can never have too much talent.

Good interview.

Not sure I buy his response about having Pat and henne though.

That last answer sure was a ringing endorsement for Beck lol. Also, just to point out what a poker player Ireland has become under Parcells, he says he believes Pat White can be a an NFL starter at qb, but then admits he was drafted specifically for the Wildcat.

So he is a poker player, who puts out smoke screens, but his endorsement of Beck is right on. Some peoples hate is so obvious.

A lot to read between the lines except with Beck. His days are numbered.

yeah as much as i'm a huge Beck suporter after listening to jeff lrelands press conference and watching his facial exspressions and his tone of voice when asked if beck was on the trade block does not sound to good for Beck. I wish him the best.

I say beck stays and we don't suit up White as a QB. I say he becomes a receiver so we can put him on the field. If we put White as a QB, do we make Henne a #3? Don't think so. White is brought in for other reasons. I still believe Henne is our future.

It seems we'd probably only carry Pen and Henne as QBs. Have Pat as a wr but eligible as emergency QB.

Bottom line, there were more pressing needs on this team and White should have been a 3rd or 4th rd pick. Picking early in the 2nd is way too high for a role player.
The man will never be a starting QB in the NFL. He compares favorably to Hines Ward or Randle El.
It's a joke to suggest he's a better QB prospect than Beck.

I agree he compares to Randel El but Ward caught 149 college passes.
He played tailback, receiver and qb while Pat White has oly played qb.
THat makes him the rawest of the raw as a wide receiver.

Why isn't anyone metioning the possibility of him lining up at tailback? The great thing about White is that you can line him up at any of the skill positions and he'll create mismatches and confusion. Say we only run 3-5 wildcat plays a game that focus specifically on his skillset. If opposing defenses don't take the time to prepare for those situations, that's 3-5 big plays a game. If they do, it takes away from their time to prepare for our conventional smashmouth game. He's already changing the way teams have to prepare for us and play us... and he hasn't stepped on the field.

Is 2a a little high for White? Possibly, but what if we didn't get him and New England did? I'm glad we didn't take that chance!

I don't want to be misunderstood. I am intruiged by the pick, but he doesn't seem to have a well defined position in the NFL. That usually causes a player to drop in the draft despite great athleticism(Matt Jones being an exception). I still think they could have gotten him in the 3rd or 4th rd.
I don't believe Ireland. White will primarily play WR and run the wildcat. There is no way he is going to compete with Henne for the starting QB position.
He does, however, render Beck expendable as a 3rd QB and that's a shame because I still believe Beck can be developed. The Phins will probably cut him and he'll end up with the Pats.
