this guy is such a moron. its no wonder people dont take him seriously. just look at the things he says.

"I think every team should have an equal chance at winning the lottery, from the best team all the way down," Van Gundy told The Houston Chronicle. "I don't want to accuse anyone of anything. I would say to take away any possible conflict of interest, everyone should have an equal chance at the top pick all the way down. That way there would be absolutely no question by anybody about anything."

this guy is a complete moron. not only is he saying every team should have a chance at the lottery, but an EQUAL chance! since the lottery was installed its been kind of messed up already with so many teams getting lottery picks that werent supposed to. and i love how he calls it a "reward" for teams to loose. a reward? im sorry but i would take a championship over the #1 pick anyday (duh, who wouldnt) nobody ENVYS the team with the #1 pick, sure its nice, but its not a reward, its COMPENSATION. doesnt he realize every league is run like this?! isnt that common sense?!! its the LEAST that the worsts teams in any league could have. this guy just baffles me. he cant be serious. what a moron!!

i wonder if he would be saying the same thing if he wasn't in the playoffs.

That has to be the stupidest idea i have ever

How about they take away the lottery and give the 1st pick to the worst overall team and so on?

i think the current format is ok. but i dont see a big deal in getting rid of the lottery, its done to prevent teams from tanking games, but every year the 3 worst teams in the league are obviously out of any contention, so those teams will tank games regardless because they are then playing for lottery balls! remember worst team has the highest percentage of getting a lottery pick 2nd worst has 2nd highest etc. i think it doesnt really make much of a difference. and plus, if it was so great, then why dont any other sports do it?!

also, just to show you it doesnt make much of a difference, cleveland had their eyes set on lebron james since his SOPHMORE year in high school. you think cleveland bothered to improve their team in those 2 years? they knew they werent going to go anywhere in atleast a few years, so why take yourself out of lebron james contention? you think they tanked any games the year before they drafted him? if it meant a greater chance of drafting him?!! not saying they did, but its probably what happened.

Because football its harder to tank games and with only 16 games usually all the teams are in the race until atleast mid season.

In baseball the draft isn't as important as the other leagues so they dont care as much. A baseball team doesn't tank to get the #1 overall pick

true but still, waht im saying is that its not really an effective system, teams will still throw away games and also, look at how many teams who werent even the 3 worst teams have gotten the #1 pick, i dont know the exact number but i remember hearing about it and i know it hasnt been on average

especially with s many teams getting great undrafted players in baseball.

The only reason he's saying this is because of the possibility of Oden/Durant/Wright coming out. All 3 would be perfect compliments to Yao/TMac, and he's got no shot.

Here is how you solve this:

Give the NBA Champion ONE ping pong ball.....then give the next team two...all the way down to the last team which gets 32 ping pong balls...or whatever the amount would be for the last ranked team.....put all the balls in a machine and then see who gets what. The NBA Champs would still have a 1 in 32 shot at the first pick. That's fair.

Horrible idea by Van Gundy. Even if the odds were 32-1, say Dallas ends up getting Greg Oden. How the hell is that fair to scrub teams like Charlotte and Atlanta?

But then again, if you're a team that is in the lottery every year for like 10 straight years, you'll eventually had a million studs on your team. How is that fair?

Who knows. Van Gundy's idea won't happen
