Some of you believe that if we sign Dan Wilkerson, we are going to cut Zgonina...Wrong!!!!
After hearing one of Saban's interview saying that he likes Zgonina's versatility and he could play any position in the D-Line, I don't see any way that he won't be a dolphin this season...
He did a great job last season disrupting several plays and he had an Int also I believe...

I've said this before and still believe it, however, it won't be because we signed Wilkinson. IF (and it's a big if) Manny Wright steps up to the plate during TC, Zgonina based on his age could be the odd man out on the Dline...If Wright shows some promise and they still sign Wilkinson, someone along that line has to go and based on age and potential for declining skills, it could be Zgonina...of course, if Traylor can't recover in time, then all bets are off and we keep Zgonina, Wright, and Wilkinson (if signed)...

As the days go by and Wilkinson is not sign, it's more and more likely that we can't get a deal done. So we might not have to worry about Zgonina losing a spot on the final roster.

But all I'm saying is that Zgonina is likely the odd man out of we do sign Wilkinson. Not saying it will happen, but that's most likely the case. Keeping four DT's that our in there 30's isn't something any HC would want to do. Now a day you will see any team have a mixture of both old and new.

Zgonina has an edge because he can do everything. He can play 1-gap, 2-gap, NT, DT, run stopping DE, and can even long snap. And he's cheap.

For what he lacks in skill he makes up for in power. the guy appears to be one of the strongest on the roster. Look at him compared to other d-line men. His appendages are freaking tree trunks. I saw roth and he was a big guy but you get the scale in this picture:

During a broad cast John Madden noted this several years ago about Jeff Zgonina, saying he has "cankles" - you can't really tell where his calves end and where his ankles start.

Manny Wright better get in shape if he even wants a roster spot. That guy needs to start showing his potential. Zgonina is a huge boy...and I wouldn't cut him because he has diversity and he's a good leader on the field. Also, he demonstrates the strength that most DT's should have in this league :)

i have to agree!

they wouldn't cut Zgonina right away. We would probably have him compete with the young guys for a roster spot. If Vickerson or Wright or Evans emerges in trainign camp, he would then probably lose his job. If we don't sign Wilkerson, I still think Zgonina will have to fight the young guys.

I think if Big Daddy is signed either Green or Shaw will be cut for the roster spot for camp. I have trouble believing we will keep 6 defensive linemen over the age of 30 for the season. 5 would be more than enough. Either Traylor or Zgonina would have to go and while Zgonina is more versatile, Traylor had/has the greater starting level skills. We will see.

Every year fans write of Zgonina. He is not going anywhere.

Zgonina's a veteran with Super Bowl experience. I'm sure he'll stick around if Saban thinks he's worth it or if the scrubs aren't ready yet.

he also has the squarest head i have ever seen... so he has that going for him
