Jerome Messam interview on WQAM/Sounds like he has indeed signed with Fins

I like him. Bad character history but at least he's well spoken and thoughtful.

Parents were immigrants from Jamaica to Canada, born in Toronto. Played a little hockey growing up but never anything organized, he was a basketball, football track guy.

Michael Irvin asked if people or girls tease him about a Canadian accent when he's in the States. Jerome said actually when he's in the States he gets people telling him that he sounds and talks white. That launched a whole interesting conversation between he and Michael Irvin about that because Irvin says that he grew up not necessarily speaking correctly, saying stuff like "you's crazy" just because that's how they talk to each other in the hood, and later on he got a vocal coach to help him make sure he could speak more correctly and when that happened he had people telling him he's selling out and speaking white and not "keeping it real" etc. Messam clearly identified with that.

He won the CFL's Most Outstanding Canadian award, and was also League All-Star.

The San Francisco 49ers, Minnesota Vikings, Cincinnati Bengals and Miami Dolphins all looked at him after he finished the season. But he tore his meniscus (as we know) in the second to last game of the year and this is interesting but he tore his calf muscle trying to do too much, too soon in his rehab. He said a lot of the teams interested in him fell off when that happened, but Miami stuck with him. He said they've "been recruiting (him) for the past two years" since he's been up in Canada. That's interesting. He went down to Miami and had a great visit, met everyone, saw the facilities and he said it just had a great feel.

Michael Irvin asking the hard questions. He actually asked him about the fight with a teammate and asked how he got himself into that situation. He said that he was cool with the locker room and didn't have any problems there, it was just a thing with that individual person, "as a man there are just certain things you're not going to stand for, and you have to stand up and defend yourself". He explained that afterward he patched things up with the person involved and they're cool with each other now, they've moved forward, it was just one of those things where he did what he felt like he had to do at that time. Michael Irvin asks a follow up question, because Messam used the words "defend myself" and so Irvin asks why he felt like he needed to defend himself from a teammate. Messam tried to tip toe around it but explained that maybe in certain situations certain guys feel like they can get away with certain things because of seniority, or because they've proven themselves, and he said as a rookie there's a certain amount of hazing and stuff that gos on and he was cool with that but at some point it gets to a point of disrespecting him as a peson...and he's not cool with that. He said it was a situation where a woman in his life was being disrespected, and he wasn't going to stand for it.

Michael Irvin sounded like he just pinched off the most satisfying loaf ever. "Ok, that's what I wanted to hear." He shared that at first he was wondering why the Dolphins grabbed Messam and that's when he read further and got it, because to win championships you need guys willing to fight for who they love, and he needs to love the Dolphins and stand up for the Dolphins from people that would try and beat them and disrespect them just like he did for that woman, because like Messam said the Dolphins have been talking to him for years and they stood by him while those other teams fell away after the calf injury and they gave him this chance. Irvin says he keeps trying to tell people that attitude is what you need to win championships. He asks Messam will he fight for the Dolphins and of course Jerome says tooth and nail.

Seemed really genuinely excited to be talking to Michael Irvin.

I really like Irvin's perspective. It's no wonder he played like a beast.

Love him or hate him, no DB wanted anything to do with Irvin. He was like Ray Lewis with a number in the 80's i.e. real physical.

Sounds like the kid may be a good pick up, hopefully, he hasn't lost too much with the injuries.

The more I hear about him, the more of a pleasant surprise he becomes in my mind. Right now, I am not dismissing him as just another Lex Hilliard. He may be able to really contribute in the base offense.

Well intentioned or not, the fight was not good. He need to have a good attitude.

A 245 lb rb that runs a 4.4? Those #'s can't be right but if they are the guy is a freak. That doesn't mean he'll be good in the NFL by any means but just off of his physical stature alone I'd think he'd make the roster.

Interesting interviewto know a little more about him and his personality. If you're able, listen to ricky interview as well, pretty nice.

?Christian Okoye?[/QUOTE

Okoye was a big strong punishing runningback. Messam is a twinkle toes compared to Okoye. Messam runs too soft for his size and strength. He should be delivering blows not getting tackled by the first defender too many times and going down too easy. The guy needs to learn to run with a vengeance and start hammering would-be tacklers.

Yes he's 6'4" and 240 to 250 lbs and ran in the 4.4's to 4.5's in Pro Day type settings coming out of college. Very similar to Tyrone Wheatley that way.
