Jets' Abraham signs franchise tender
Hempstead, NY (Sports Network) - New York Jets defensive end John Abraham signed his one-year franchise tender reportedly worth $6.7 million on Monday.
According to the Newark Star Ledger, the three-time Pro Bowl selection remains disappointed that the Jets will not give him a long-term deal.
Abraham was selected to his third Pro Bowl in 2004, recording 9 1/2 sacks in 12 games before an injury to the lateral collateral ligament in his right knee sidelined him.
He missed New York's two playoff games last season and was roundly criticized by fans and media for not trying to play.
Abraham was one of the Jets' four first-round picks in the 2000 draft. He also earned Pro Bowl honors in 2001 and 2002, and he has 43 sacks in his career. However, Abraham has missed 23 of 80 regular-season games with various injuries since joining the league, which the Jets have stated is a main reason for their reluctance to give him a long-term contract.
