Let's face it - he's not a great coach but he has done a heck of a job holding the team together under HORRIBLE circumstances this year.

He has maintained focus while having no home stadium, limited practice facilities, an owner talking about moving the team, and a large percentage of his players/coaches working with makeshift lodgings for themselves and their immediate families.

Wow. I know they don't have a great record, but if he doesn't deserve at least a little respect for perservering through all that I don't know who does.

Not to mention he has to deal with having Aaron "Mr. Interception" Brooks as his QB!

Jim Hasslet for COTY!

Sorry but anyone calling for haslett for coach of the year has lost the plot! the saints have stunk all year as they generally have in hasletts tenure and they are what 3-10? come off it dungy is 13-0 lovie smith has somehow got a talentless bears team on the brink of the playoffs marvin lewis almost has the bengals in the playoffs for the first time in 15 odd years hell saban is more deserving than haslett

he would have if the Saints went 8-8 or better but they have sucked on the football field

hes a Horrible coach. he has been his entire NFL carrer. to give him the "Coach of the Year" award would be an insult to all NFL coaches and fans.

I will say this ... even though the Saints lost Monday, he made a brilliant coaching move at the end of the first half by taking a time out to get back the 10 seconds Brooks' intentional grounding penalty lost.

If a hurricane washed away the Colts stadium they would not be 13-0. :shakeno:

They would be lucky to be 8-8 if they had to deal with the same circumstances the Saints have.

Note that I never said Haslett was a great coach - in fact I went out of my way to say that he wasn't. The Saints sucked before Katrina happened. I just have to give respect to anyone who has dealt with circumstances like that and not completely lost it. He definitely earned his paycheck this year.

Anyone who doesn't think Hasslet has a lot of character for handling this season the way he has is crazy!

You say he isnt a great coach....but yet you want to give him coach of the year? Good thinking. Let's give Aaron Brooks MVP. I know he sucks, but he went through a lot this year.

Haslett went through a lot, and had to put up with a lot of bull**** from the league. But that doesnt mean we should give him an award for it.

Haslett is terrible. Wannstedt would have won as many games. Would you nominate him for coach of the year in those circumstances. It would be a charity award, and an negate any legitimacy that the award ever had.

COTY shouldn't just go to the coach with most wins. If it did then Dungy (not Saban!) would get it right now. Instead - it should go to the person who did the best job overall. Hasslet has had to overcome RIDICULOUS circumstances just to get his team on a field to play every week - much less win. The guy deserves some credit if not COTY.

If not Hasslet...well what about Mike Tice then? I think he deserves it a heck of a lot more than Saban does. So does Tony Dungy. Marvin Lewis. Lovie Smith. All more deserving candidates than Saban.

I love Saban. Saban has done a good job this year - but unless we make the playoffs (we won't!) he doesn't really deserve to be on the list. There are more deserving cadidates you Homers! :dolphins:

Haslett is not only a horrible coach, he has whined incessantly about the situation post-Katrina so much that it has bled over into his team, sans Joe Horn. I am a Sirius Satellite owner, and on NFL network they interview him weekly. He is ALWAYS talking about how horrible things are, woe is me, woe is us, etc. That attitude has absolutely 100% bled over into his team. Do NOT get me wrong. I am not unsypathetic to what happened. I can, however, tell you that as a leader, Haslett should not make excuses, nor let his team make excuses all season long for why they suck. Aaron Brooks is crying around about having a traveling weight-room. Waaaaaahhh... Aaron - give me your $6.6M for this year and I'll lift weights in a pile of cow maneur. I'll also have a better QB rating than you. If anything, the hurricane SAVED Haslett's job. The owner knew it would be a HORRIBLE political move to fire him after Katrina, which has effectively kept Haslett in his position this year.

Its called coach of the year not coach who coped best with a natural disaster! all that matters is what the team does ON THE FIELD and the saints have sucked as for Tice i know lets give the award to a coach who takes a playoff team brings in some high priced free agents gets tipped for the superbowl and promptly loses 6 of the first 8 games! Now i don't think Saban should be coach of the year but the only coach who has done more with less is lovie smith (who is more deserving than saban) who is deserving as are lewis and dungy, haslett and tice have both done pathetic jobs and deserved to be chastised not awarded for it

I couldn't agree more with that statement. Jim Haslett is hands-down the worst coach in the NFL. I thought that even while Wanny was still with the Dolphins. He has done nothing in New Orleans, save for 2000, when they won a play-off game. I know everyone in the New Orleans organization deserves sympathy for everything that has happened, and the Saints haven't gotten any breaks this year, but Haslett was a terrible coach before the hurricane and he hasn't doesn't anything to change my opinion this year.
