I don't know if you younger guys remember Jim Marshall. He was the guy who ran the wrong way after recovering a fumble against the 49ers...he ended up scoring a safety for them.

So anyway, old senile Jim thinks the 72 Dolphins would not even get a first down against this year's Patriots. Sounds like this Old Dope is still bitter about the way we took care of him and his Vikings in the SB VIII (24-7). :sidelol:

Here's what the Old Dope had to say:

Ex-Viking Jim Marshall: '72 Dolphins Wouldn't Get a First Down Against the Patriots'

The debate about how the undefeated 2007 Patriots stack up against the undefeated 1972 Dolphins runs largely along generational lines, as the people voting for the Dolphins as the superior team are the people who were alive to see them.

However, one player who not only saw the '72 Dolphins but also played against them says it's not even close: These Patriots would kill those Dolphins.

Former Vikings defensive end Jim Marshall, who signed autographs Wednesday night to raise money for the Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund, said there's no comparison between the two teams.

"The '72 Dolphins wouldn't get a first down against the Patriots," Marshall said. When I asked him if he was sure the Dolphins wouldn't have any chance against the Patriots, he put his thumb and forefinger half an inch apart and said, "Not even a small one."

Marshall, who never missed a game from 1960 to 1979, said that in his view, the Steelers of the 1970s were a better team than the Dolphins of the 1970s. He also said that he hopes Packers quarterback Brett Favre plays the 30 more games in a row he needs to pass Marshall's streak of 282 consecutive starts.

"I hope Favre passes me," Marshall said. "I have so much respect for him."

Look, all homer-ism aside, ofcourse they would beat the 72 Dolphins!! Football has changed alot in 25 years..

Players are much stronger and faster and the scheming is much more sophisticated...Sorry Im just being logical, while I think Miami would do better than "no first downs" I doubt it would be much of a game.

I never said the 72 Phins would beat them, but Marshall is smoking the same stuff Ricky is if he doesn't think we could get a first down on them.

wanna know my honest opinion? (and Roman, this has nothing to do with you and your thread, it's just a general opinion on the subject.)

but I'm sick and tired of hearing about the '72 Dolphins. Honestly I am. What they did was unbelievable and was obviously the greatest season in Dolphins history...but things have changed. It's 35 years later and I hate the Pats as much as the next person but I give them credit for what they're doing. It's truly incredible. I completely understand the connection to the perfect season, so the '72 team is gonna be talked about but I'm just sick of it. Especially when some of the members act like huge babies over it.

Yea that sounds alot like sour grapes indeed..

he is right, its been 35 years. the Patriots would win 70-0 at least

It's ok....they will only be the SECOND team to have a perfect season, IF they do it....like Mercury Morris said, "They can park their car in the driveway behind ours."

What an idiot.

Players may weigh more overall these days but trust me that doesn't mean stronger and it sure as hell doesn't meaner and tougher and nastier and that helps even out a few pounds in size.

Larry Csonka would bowl through Brusci and Seau like he did to teams in the 70's and Little Kuechenberg, Little and Langer would lead the way. But no, you can't compare teams head to head from different eras unless you take lots of different scenarios into account. All you can do is compare them based on how they disposed of their contemporary competition.

As far as the Steelers being better, the only thing that kept Miami from winning 3 or 4 Super Bowls in a row was a fluke last second pass from Stabler in the '74 playoffs and then Csonka, Kiick and Warfield leaving for the WFL. And Arnsparger leaving for the Giants hurt badly too.

If you're sick of hearing about the '72 Dolphins then complain to the damn media because they're the ones that continually bug the hell out of them after every game wanting their comments and opinions on what's going on with NE. It's the worthless media that's trying to create controversy and animosity, it's what they do best.

Personally I'll never get sick hearing about the '72 team or ANY Dolphin team, except for maybe the last few seasons......:boohoo:

Exactly. They would probably get a couple of first downs. But they wouldn't score much. And the Patriots would light them up.

That wasn't even the best Fins team of all time. The 73 team was better. Some of you guys are hanging on to that way to hard.

I do understand though. The Fins haven't given us ANYTHING in over 30 years, so people are clinging to anything.

Playing 1972 rules, the Patriots wouldn't stand a chance...

These WRs, QBs, Ps, and Ks nowadays have it too damn easy...
 Right on my man. We all know what happens to Brady when he actually gets roughed up. I don't think he would have flourished before QB's wore skirts. Infact, you can talk all you want about it being 35 years later and all, but don't lose sight of the fact that many players today may not have survived a game in those days. It goes both ways when you start cross examining eras.

That's beyond ridiculous.

No, they haven't won a SB since '74 but we've had lots of excellent teams, tremendous players and great moments in those years. If that's NOTHING to you then maybe you should be a Cardinals fan or something.
