Jimmy Johnson...a class act

When Jimmy came in, he tried to distance himself and the team from the history of the Dolphins. Shula wasn't welcome. He was very scarce in Davie during the Johnson era. And he spent most of his football time around the Buccaneers organization (where Mike was coaching). I think that's the root of Shula's dislike of Johnson. Even Dan said last week that he wasn't happy a lot of the time when Jimmy was the coach.

I think that if Jimmy had been cool with Shula and didn't try so hard to divert attention and recognition away from our proud history, Shula wouldn't have quite the same hard feelings over Johnson's handling of Marino because he would have been a coach just donig what he thought was best. But Shula had experienced firsthand that that wasn't the case. Jimmy had to be the biggest fish in town. And it bothered him that he played second fiddle to Marino.

Marino was untouchable. Jimmy was a dictator who ruled with fear. He could cut anyone. Especially a guy who he hadn't brought in. But Dan was uncuttable. He was a legend. Jimmy would forever be in his shadow, even if he brought the Dolphins a Super Bowl.

You look at Dave Wannstedt. One of the first things he did after being named head coach was reach out to Shula and make sure he knew that he was welcome again. Dave is a good man and isn't consumed by ego like Jimmy was.

I don't think that Jimmy is being classy so much as he's just deciding not to engage in a public pissing match that he has no chance of winning. Especially now with Dan entering the Hall in a matter of days. Dan is bigger than him down here. Shula is bigger than him down here. Dan had his glory years under Shula. Both men are forever loved and embraced by the community (while Jimmy is not). And they're both kicking him. He can't fight back.

anyway Jimmy Johnson handed this franchise to failure....he didnt care....i hate him....

Big deal. I didn't see one autistic children's body get injured, or the monetary fund upended because someone stepped on a cardboard box.

Just think of all those American flags on the uniforms and helmets of players that get dirty, torn, slammed all over the ground and players.

its not like he doesnt ...its a matter of fact as he cant say anything....he could spew all his anger out on miami on sundays and tell us we will go 1-15(which he probably will do) but he has to tuck his tail in between his legs and take the heat....because thats about all he can do

Nice honest post Muck--I remember in the Uk back in the 70's my team leeds Utd had a great manager in Don Revie (shula). He left and a new manager took over. His name was Brian Clough (Johnson) who was very well thought of in football, but the first thing he did was to chuck all of Leeds's history into the bin saying this is where it all starts, I do it my way. Needless to say he lasted something like 44 days at the club before being sacked. He was a good coach though just like Jimmy, and he went on to win leagues and cups with another team. He was in a similar situation where as he couldn't say anything because no one would give him a chance. the worrying thing is it took Leeds years to get over that

He could easily counter with some verbage of his own, maybe even pointing to Marino's inconsistency during the last couple of years, but that would take some of the spotlight off Danny and his HOF induction...and he knows it. For that, I am thanking Jimmy Johnson.

Now were the inconsistencies due to an impotent offensive coordinator and collection of scrubs for surrounding "talent"? Most definitely, but still he chooses to remain silent and let Dan enjoy his moment. I'm drinking a green lizard in your honor, coach.

actually my friend it was jj who made comments to the press which shula ignored for 9 years where were you in 95 when jj said the game passed shula by? and the comments to local press in 96?

muck: the comment dan made saying he wasn't real happy here with jj was a direct answer to a question about that at dan's retirement press conference
i do believe it was a jason cole question too. and imo it was dan who handled that with class but by saying little he got his point across. everyone knew no love lost between jj and marino.
 
Jimmy Johnson and Don Shula are not even in the same class. Shula is the biggest class act you'll ever find. I admire Shula for saying what's on his mind. I mean if you're a real Dolphins fan you probably agree with him.

I meet JJ and in person he is a nice guy, but as a coach I believe he was overrated. Plus, the whole handcuffing of Marino still bothers me. Yeah, JJ brought in a good defense, but all of JJ's years what WR's did Marino have?? Besides OJ (and they ruined his career) it was all down hill.
 
Jimmy and class don't belong in the same room. He was all over Shula the
last couple of his coaching years. Making comments to undercut him.
 
What leg would JJ have to stand on if he dumped on Dan? He left after getting lambasted by what 50+pts in a playoff game? He can't dump on Dan because he knows deep down inside that he put together such a terrible offense and overrated defense, he knows it wasn't Dan's fault. Dan is the only reason JJ won anything here. How many times did Dan even late in his career just pull a big play out of nowhere and give us a win? JJ didnt put together a good team here and certainly was lost getting an offense together.
 
You know I think Jimmy had a huge ego and he sure did not do u sany favors. However, I am disappointed that Shula keeps lashing out. A man of his stature is typically above that kind of stuff. It is also distracting at a tiem that is supposed to be about Marino. Not my favorite Shula moves.

As far as the Flutie Flakes, get over it cow pie. It was nto a slam against the kids and you Bills fans know it. It was a slam at Flutie Flakes. And make no doubt about it, although a "portion" of the proceeds goes to autisim some other people are making profit as well.
I have no problem with what Johnson did. It was symbolic of Flutie not Autisim.
