Jimmy Wilson, a reserve safety/slot corner for the Dolphins, is not expected to re-sign with the Dolphins before the start of free agency, the Palm Beach Post has learned.

The Dolphins only have one sure starting safety in Reshad Jones so Wilson seemingly has an opportunity to start for Miami.

If he signs elsewhere, the Dolphins will also need a new slot corner. Jamar Taylor or Will Davis could be options if neither wins a starting job. Safety Michael Thomas is also a possibility.

Wilson has been with the Dolphins since he was selected in the seventh-round of the 2011 NFL Draft.

Free agency begins next Tuesday. Teams can negotiate with their own free agents up until then.

The Dolphins are treating Wilson the same way they treated Chris Clemons and Nolan Carroll last year. Let the market set their price before considering re-signing them.

I wonder what Jimmy can get on the open market. Teams will look at his versatility as an asset, although it's clear that he struggled switching back in forth last season and had his fair share of mental mistakes.

If they turn on the 2013 video, they'll see a guy who played very well as the slot/nickel CB.

I'd like to keep him, but not in that "switch him from safety to CB role". Keep him at CB, nickel CB . . . and I think you get the most out of him.

Jimmy isn't going to command a huge price, this move is smart. Clay on the other hand might get paid, Miami would be wise to lock him down before FA begins. Odrick too, letting him test the market if you truly want to re-sign him might blow up in your face.

I was on Jimmy's bandwagon coming into the league but I can't stand this walking penalty anymore

Yet more proof there is a some kind of higher being out there somewhere that hates the Miami Dolphins.

Yes but after Carroll' s market was set thought they should have resigned him for the money he got. I understand he is not a top corner but again you need depth and you need alot of DB's .

did jimmy wilson make ONE impact play last year.. he was constantly getting beat or flagged.. i would bring him back at the league minimum, maybe

I agree this guy declined into a liability and penalty machine thanks to him being used for his "versatility"...ive said it before but too many times this coaching staff tries to use guys in too many ways that they never really master 1 position...keep him as a slot corner and ST guy...

i guess it doesnt even matter cause i feel he is replaceable with mike thomas coming back, walt aikens stepping up (lotta faith in this dude) hopefully and taylor/davis getting their last chances to prove themselves...and then there is the draft and FA so I could care less if he is back or not

Agree. Had we signed Carroll to a 2-3 year contract at what he got last year, we would be in far better shape at CB this year. He's one draft pick we should have kept. It's not like he was expensive at all.

We seriously need to upgrade third safety/nickel corner. I don't want to see Wilson out there in any capacity anymore.

I'm all for Michael Thomas taking Jimmy Wilson's role.

I'd bring back Wilson IF he has no market and Dolphins can get him back on the cheap. I'd still have Thomas on team no matter what.

Agreed I would have been more comfortable with him starting on the boundary than Finnegan last season. Carroll barely got burn with Eagles too.

I think Jimmy Wilson is really good in a limited role. When you give him more responsibility than his level of play decreases and weaknesses are more exposed. It's a classic case.

It's like the 4th OF on a baseball team who hits .300 with 100 at bats but next season hits .260 with 300 at bats OR the backup PG who shoots .490 and avg 8ppg in 18 min but shoots .430 and avg 8ppg in 30 min.

let this guy walk. to me he is one of the reasons we have been mediocre for years now. time to upgrade some players and he is one of them
