Joe Philbin doesn’t like the perception that the Dolphins didn’t aggressively pursue free agent quarterback Matt Flynn.
Philbin, the Dolphins head coach who spent the last four years coaching Flynn in Green Bay, was asked by a reporter today why he didn’t pursue Flynn as aggressively as many people thought they would. And Philbin said people who think the Dolphins didn’t pursue Flynn aggressively are wrong.
I think we made an aggressive push,” Philbin said. “We got him in here relatively quickly. Again, we had a great meeting. Matt and I had some conversations, a number of conversations prior to his arrival to Miami. We had some subsequent ones after. He’d probably be able to give you better answer as to why he chose to go elsewhere.”
That aggressive push may have been hampered by the fact that the Dolphins first aggressively pushed for Peyton Manning, but Philbin said he’s not sure why Flynn picked the Seahawks.
“Again, you need to ask Matt Flynn why he’s in Seattle,” Philbin said. “There’s a myriad factors that go into why people make decisions about their own future, which is their prerogative. And clubs have their own prerogative as to how they are going to decide to move forward. And so again, it always takes two people to get a marriage and so I wish him well. He’s a great young man. But he’s better to ask why he’s in Seattle.”
Flynn’s decision to play for the Seahawks even though the Dolphins made an aggressive push — and even though Flynn already knows he can play well in Philbin’s offense — would seem to be another indication of the widespread perception that a whole lot of players just don’t want to play for the Dolphins right now.
Philbin, however, is accentuating the positives with his quarterbacks. Of David Garrard, Philbin said, “I think he throws a real catchable ball.” And Philbin saidMatt Moore “managed the games very well.”
So the Dolphins will have either a quarterback who throws a catchable ball or a game manager. But they won’t have Manning or Flynn, the quarterbacks they pursued aggressively.

I can tell you $8 million reasons, for the upcoming year alone, why Flynn is in Seattle.

People need to let the Flynn thing go. Dolphins offered what they thought he was worth. He got more money elsewhere. It probably was a big difference in money.

No, the Dolphins did NOT pursue Flynn aggressively...clearly. The media loves this whole "Dolphins throw themselves at people and people reject them" thing. No. The only player the Dolphins really threw themselves at was Peyton Manning, and yes, he chose to go elsewhere. Flynn probably got an offer somewhere in the $3-5M/yr range, and for now, I'm willing to trust that offer was based on Philbin's assessment of Flynn. You know, the guy who knows exactly what the difference is between Flynn and a guy like Rodgers...mentally and physically. If I'm Seattle, I'm worried.

Joe Philbin also knows exactly how and why Flynn had those two big games, the latter of which was clearly used as a showcase. He knows how they called that game offensively, and how much of those stats everyone drools over was due to Flynn and how much was due to other factors.

Flynn went to the highest bidder. That's it. Nothing more to it.

The Dolphins made him an offer, for what we thought he was worth. He said no and went to the team that paid the most $$$.

Let it go.

No hard feelings for Flynn taking more $$$.

This may be his only big deal in the NFL and he had to take the better offer for himself and his family.

Joe was just being classy and not throwing his fomer QB from Green Bay under the bus. Sure it would be nice to hear "Well I didn't think he was worth the asking price so we passed on him" but Joe does not seem the type to disparage his former player. so he took the high road. Only next year will tell us if it was the right move.

That was exactly my first impression also when reading that. There was absolutely no reason to taint a guy he's coached for 4 years before or after the fact. That the team who went all out to pay Marshall and Dansby among other FAs let this one walk speaks volumes without any verbalization.

Actually, Garrard has a beter resume' than Flynn, so I don't see why the media has gone out of their way to manufacture this perceived problem with the Dolphins

More money and I think he feels he can beat out Tavaris for the starting job pretty easily. He would have had more comp in Miami.

Actually both of the qbs we have will thrive in Philibins West Coast System. How far can they take us?

I don't understand why people say this. That is being greedy. Do you really believe 8 million is a good amount of money for family values? Hell no! $$$ is nice but it IS the root of all evil. look it up. The kid wanted more cash in His pocket. Nothing to do with the family (what "family", you mean his gold digger girlfriend?). A family can live Very comfortably with a million in the bank and steady income of a 200-400,000.00 (or what not)

The more sincere/loving families are rarely a wealthy one. I work in Accounting and see a lot "wealthy" people.. they're not happy and all they care about is money.

All in All, the kid wanted more cash. Since apparently money is Everything in Today's world. December 21st couldn't come any sooner (joke).

This isn't a knock on you. It would just be nice to see football players who claim to be real men have some Value, Honor, Respect.. anything! but nope, it's all about that Paper. ...America has changed....

I am perfectly fine with Flynn in Seattle. I never wanted him in the first place. Philbin and Sherman knew that Flynn could not beat out Moore, but they were willing to sign him for what he was worth. Seattle, desperate for a QB, over paid for a guy with average physical ability, and minimal experience. Flynn was the only winner. He cashed in while he still could.
