Miami Dolphins: Coach Joe Philbin unfiltered
by: Omar Kelly
If you ever wanted an opportunity to overdose on Miami Dolphins information this is your chance to learn everything media members learned from new coach Joe Philbin today. New Dolphins coach Joe Philbin has a very thought out approach.
We talk quarterbacks, offensive line, his vision to draft his players, defensive scheme….everything you could possibly want is addressed during Philbin’s hour long talk.
Strap in and consume this 9,000 word, unfiltered approach to the information.
(On being involve with the CBA, contract disputes, and so on as a head coach) – “It’s good to have a broad exposure to it. I’m not into the nitty-gritty and all of the details, but obviously Dawn Aponte does a great job. She’s extremely knowledgeable. She’s worked with the league office. She’s about as knowledgeable as anybody that you could have in that position. And Jeff (Ireland) obviously deals with that on a daily basis as well. I think we have two people in the building that have vast knowledge so I don’t think they need me necessarily to get in their way. It’s also good to have a general understanding of some of the basic principles.”

From Omar Kelly's timeline:
Omar Kelly Don't fear you'll miss anything from Joe Philbin's hour. We kinda got it covered. http://lockerz.com/s/196164542
Omar Kelly Joe Philbin said having Mike Sherman, a former head coach, on his staff has been great. "He's had a lot of suggestions...I've known Mike Sherman 32 years and he's proven he's an excellent football coach."
Omar Kelly "I'm 0-1. I bought a much bigger house than I needed," Dolphins coach Joe Philbin said about his move to South Florida.
Omar Kelly "Sometimes those things work out, and sometimes both parties want to dance," Joe Philbin said about the free agent process.
Omar Kelly "My feeling is our offensive line needs to get better if our quarterback is to get better," Dolphins coach Joe Philbin said. "We need to get a handle on what these guys do well and what areas they need to improve upon."
Omar Kelly Joe Philbin said he expects to have an open competition for the starting quarterback spot, which would begin in the voluntary camps. From there they'll decide how to split the reps up.
Omar Kelly "There are certain qualities you like," Joe Philbin said about his receivers. He talked about having someone quick, and having someone bigger to work the middle of the field. "You want to create a little bit more work for the defense. Hartline starts outside and he may move inside. Where we line up out tight ends. We have to have some flexibility."
Omar Kelly "We lost a talented receiver. We're going to have to look in the roster to find some productive guys," Joe Philbin said about trading Brandon Marshall. "We have develop these guys."
Omar Kelly "We're committed to winning, and committed to doing everything possible to have the best team we can in 2012. We get paid to make decisions. And we understand that they aren't going to like everything we did. They didn't throw any eggs at my car as I drove by. Let's see how long that lasts," Joe Philbin said.
Omar Kelly "We're working through the prospects of the draft and we're looking to see some development of our own guys," Joe Philbin said of his receiver depth."You're talking to a guy in nine years at Green Bay we never had one free agent come in."
Omar Kelly Joe Philbin said Reggie Bush gives the offense a lot of flexibility. "He can do somethings in the passing game for you and expose some weaknesses in the opposing defense."
Omar Kelly Joe Philbin's offensive approach: "You play to your strengths and hide your weaknesses.
Omar Kelly "I've been on board with the decisions that have been making," Dolphins coach Joe Philbin said about the team's offseason moves.
Omar Kelly "Gates has great speed and you're always looking for a vertical presence in the passing game. The other guys are unknown quantities to us and there is not a lot of game film to study at this time," Joe Philbin said. "We want precise route runners, disciplined route runner....We want a guy who can beat man coverage. It's a one-on-one games and we have to find guys who can win the match ups on a consistent basis."
Omar Kelly Dolphins coach Joe Philbin said the coaches aren't sure what John Jerry is. "We've seen him at both spots and have to find a home for him. Got to find where he's most comfortable and most effective....Good news is he's played a couple (games) but he's got to anchor down."
Omar Kelly Joe Philbin said the team is searching for a pressure player, someone to add a presence "on third down, nickel plays."
Omar Kelly Joe Philbin said Jared Odrick has some pass rushing punch to him and "he's a guy who is entering year three, and that's when guys step up and emerge."
Omar Kelly "When we come back on April 10th everybody is competing for a (starting) job," Joe Philbin said when asked about Richard Marshall, who is a cornerback.
Omar Kelly Richard Marshall's tackling ability was one of the best things the Dolphins liked about the new addition.
Omar Kelly "We're going to be a multiple defensive team," Dolphins coach Joe Philbin said about the defense.
Omar Kelly Dolphins coach Joe Philbin said they watched the 2011 season and "came up with a wishlist of things we'd like to add to the football team....You can't fix everything in free agency. When you're doing things the right way you're developing your own guys, re-signing your own guys. That's the model."
Omar Kelly "We've got two corners with size and speed. I'm real excited about Vontae Davis. He's a very physical guy who plays hard and is a good tackler," Joe Philbin said of his cornerbacks Vontae Davis and Sean Smith. "They've shown spurts when they've played extremely well and what we're looking for is for them to get more consistent....There is some excellent film on tape and we're looking for them to play more consistently."
Omar Kelly "[Jared] Odrick is a guy we're looking to see more growth out of. [Tony] McDaniel is a guy with great size and is a very athletic player," Joe Philbin said.
Omar Kelly "We've got guys who can run with tight ends and run with inside receivers," Joe Philbin said of his linebackers.
Omar Kelly "You have to be strong down the middle in football, and Paul [Soliai] is a rare player. There aren't that many guys in the league who can combine the size, strength and athleticism. He's a key component of the defense and we're excited he's back," Joe Philbin said.
Omar Kelly Joe Philbin said the coaches hope to see Koa Misi become more productive in his third season, and make "more impact plays."
Omar Kelly "We thought he had a very good rookie year. That's a critical position in our offense," Joe Philbin said of Mike Pouncey, who he said impressed him by staying on his feet.
Omar Kelly Joe Philbin said Jake Long has come by the offense a lot. "All the things you hear about him seem to be true....He says he's ready to go when the offseason program starts."
Omar Kelly Joe Philbin said a fullback isn't very important to his offense. "It's game plan specific. It's not mandatory that you have a pound it fullback."
Omar Kelly Dolphins coach Joe Philbin said former CFL standout Jerome Messam "is an interesting prospect. He's a real big man. We'll see how he picks things up. Pass protection is going to be real big."
Omar Kelly "You're going to see a team that is tough physically and mentally. A team that plays the game the right way," Joe Philbin said.
Omar Kelly Joe Philbin from this morning. http://lockerz.com/s/196174449
Omar Kelly "The number one rule to coaching is you've got to be yourself. You can't be someone you're not," Joe Philbin said. "I've always been under this premise: you are a teacher."
Omar Kelly "The loudest yeller doesn't necessarily impress me," Joe Philbin said. "What matters to me us what the film says on Monday....I hope the fans will judge me by the way the team plays on Sunday."
Omar Kelly Joe Philbin and Mike Sherman have been going through their offense the past 6 weeks. Conceptually they are comparable "big picture wise." But "maybe we did more things in the gun than he did."
Omar Kelly When asked about the Dolphins doing Hard Knocks, Joe Philbin said "I'm built for radio, not TV."
Omar Kelly "The goal as we set forth isn't to have one receiver on one side have 65 catches and the other 43. But we'd like to have more production, more balance," Joe Philbin said about his receivers.
Omar Kelly Joe Philbin said he's not involved in what dollar amount is offered to a player. "I wasn't very good at math."
