Joe Philbin & Mike Sherman's Use of Ryan Tannehill: A Square Peg in a Round Hole?

My observations are first play from scrimmage against the Saints Tanny rolled right and threw a strike to Wallace for a first down. I thought ok it worked we should see more. We didn't see it again... That kind of movement helps OLine out.
The most important pass Tanny has thrown as a Dolphin was on the 4-10 which he completed to Gibson will on the move to the right escaping the rush. Come on Joe tell Mike to move the Kid from the pocket to save his life from our offensive line. They are not playing well as a group. The weakest group on the team needs some help from our schemes to compensate for their poor play.

Is it possible that in reality philbin sherman and ireland know they aren't ready this year. They are competing of course to win every week but if they have to squeeze the peg in the hole a little bit this year by helping RT17 develop the pocket passing ability since he already has a knack for throwing on the run thus creating a much more balanced and dynamic QB by year 3-5 who knows WHEN to escape out of the pocket and WHEN to step up and wing it...wouldn't that be worth it?

I see what you're saying but I don't see how turtling and getting hit all the time helps with his development, I'm worried its taking a toll both mentally and physically and its more likely to ruin him than make him better.

Definite possibility if not a probability. However, if that's your plan, you ought to make damned sure you have adequate NFL tackles who can give him the time he needs.

Essentially they're not "ready this year," as you said, because they don't have those tackles. They've put themselves in a Catch-22 that way.

More quotes from Philbin, after the recent game, that I think fit with the ideas in the OP:

Joe Philbin said:
(On Ryan Tannehill throwing the ball on the run successfully) - “They weren’t designed (plays). While they were excellent plays, and I agree with you 100 percent, they were very good throws and very athletic plays, excellent plays. We would prefer on those plays we wouldn’t necessarily have to do that. Certainly we have movement type plays in the offense. We had one I believe to Brian Hartline in the game. We had one the other Monday Night game that we used. We’ve used them at times. We used them at times, and we will continue to do so as we see fit.”

(On if there is a concern that the accumulation of hits on Ryan Tannehill might alter his career)- “No, not at this point in time. Again, I’ll say it one more time the pass game starts with protection, you have to be able to demonstrate an ability to consistently protect the quarterback. I don’t care what level of football it is. Certainly, the more times you can keep your quarterback clean and not get hit, not get sacked, not get hurried, not get rushed, I think you’re going to be a more effective passing team. There’s probably no argument there.”

From this I gather that Philbin is telling Tannehill to keep his narrow behind int he pocket...
And again, the problem with that is that you're taking a quarterback who has demonstrated the skill to use movement to overcome (at least partially) the current problems in the passing game, telling him to stay in the pocket, and giving him nowhere near the offensive line talent needed to help him succeed in playing that way.

If you're going to tell the guy to avoid using unique skills he has that can help the team win, well then at least do you part to surround him with the talent necessary to play the way you want him to. Otherwise, let him use his unique skills! :)

How would you like to miss the playoffs this year, and then look back at that Texas A&M tape and think the team could've made the playoffs had Tannehill been allowed to use the skills he showed in it? That's about where this team is right now IMO.

what this shows me, is Tannehill was successful at rolling out, in college...

I like that Tannehill sits in the pocket. i think the only time he should run, is if the field is open in the middle, and he runs north and south. Just needs to hold onto the ball. Rolling out here and there is ok, but i'd rather it not be a big chunk of the offensive plays.

Man if Tannehill had that long to throw in the pocket this year, his sack total wouldn't be leading the league.

I have no problem booting him out. However, you cannot win longterm with making plays on the edge which I do not think you are implying.

At the end of the day, a QB has to operate from the pocket. Most effective passing comes from the pocket and ultimately it should be the safest place for the QB on the field. He is not a passer anymore once he leaves the pocket. The rules protect him more from the pocket and he can use the entire field.

Booting, play action, max pro and trying use the run game more are all things I would like to see the team do.

Yes a QB has to operate from the pocket but Miami's O Line is not playing well. I think it's more coaching than anything but that's another discussion. Right now Tannehill is sitting duck. Teams know he is take a 3 step drop and sitting there. The DE's know they only have to got about 5 yards up the field and turn in. The DT's are running stunts because the interior O Line is confused on who should pick up who.

Moving the pocket and sending him on bootlegs will not give the D Line a spot to shoot for every time. These guys are teeing off so it's more about changing things up. I am not sure why Philbin doesn't see this. Heck GB had some horrid lines over the years since Rogers took over than they moved him. Tennehill's athletic ability isn't much different than Rogers.

You know what I see in that video, that O line is better than the one the Dolphins have.

True, but although the team is leading the league in sacks, it isn't leading the league in pressures. That suggests Tannehill is succumbing to pressure significantly more than other quarterbacks, hence the concern I outlined above about whether he's being permitted to move sufficiently in response.

We all agree the line is playing like garbage. However, the question is, IMO, what are we going to do about it? Are we going to continue to coach Ryan Tannehill to be a sitting duck in the pocket, or let him use the skills he showed in that tape above?

Granted there are options available regarding changes in personnel on the line, but the results of those are an unknown quantity at this point. What we do know at this point is that our quarterback has the skill to evade the pass rush with movement if he's permitted to.

Miami is still in the bottom 1/3 of the league in pressures and when the pressure does come it usually is in 2.5 seconds or less. The line play is just awful.
