This is why today, a week after the seasons end no one knows if Coyle will stay or go and the reality is that we may not get a formal acknowledgment from Philbin on Coyle’s status. It is hard to imagine Philbin firing his defensive coordinator this year. A new DC would likely only give Philbin competition for the HC job next season. Imagine if the Dolphins fail to start the season off strong and by the bye week Ross finally pulls the cord on Philbin? I know it’s unlikely but what if say Rex Ryan was the DC? Imagine the loud screams for him to replace Philbin in season.

If we hire a new DC it will be a promotion from within. I doubt any external candidates would take a 1 year gig.

People were saying similar things last year before Lazor was hired.

Any coach that has confidence in his abilities will accept the challenge.

true dat. No one wants to work under Philbin. I wouldn't. Most of the players don't.

Coyle is staying and I have wasted my time hoping we do something to actually improve on the coaching staff.

If someone like Rex does not get a HC gig, it might be the kind of thing he would take with the idea of having an opportunity at the HC job the next year. I fear if we get someone like Rex, both of our co-ordinators will make Philbin look good (not great, mind you) and Ross will keep him and we will become the Bengals, make the playoffs, but one and done.

The only ones that might would be former head coaches looking to revive their status. But I do agree that if he moved from Coyle it's probably an in house candidate.

if coyle has a defense in all of this it will probably be the attrition card

I dont think it has much to do with working under Philbin, in fact, I think a guy like Philbin would be great to work under as a coordinator. An OC or DC gets almost complete autonomy under Philbin - from playcalling to personnel packages. Not many coordinators have that privilege. The real problem for a candidate though is that there may be a regime change in 1 year.

It will be tough to find a half decent candidate for DC to come in on a 1 year whim.

Rex I believe already has HC interviews with the Falcons and 49ers. He won't settle for DC.

Why do u have that feeling

Mostly a gut feeling but Joe likes to get business done on Mondays and Sherman was fired on the 1st Monday of last year. If they are going to make a move they need to get it done soon so they can hire a new DC and figure it out the direction the defense is heading. Scouting department is getting ready to fire up full steam ahead.

Truth be told my gut is feeling queasy because I think Coyle will remain the DC.

With all the HC changes coming there should be lots of DC's looking for a job like for example Mike Nolan. Yes it could only be a one year gig but should we fire Coyle which i favor a replacement could be found easily.
I don't see any in house options.
