Truth be told, I did not see much of a difference in the Miami Dolphins pursuing Joe Philbin andMike McCoy. I've heard good things about both offensive coordinators, who did great jobs this season for their respective teams.

But there was one thing Philbin had over McCoy that was unavoidable: He coached Green Bay Packers backup quarterback Matt Flynn, who arguably will be the NFL's most sought-after free agent. If Philbin can help the Dolphins land Flynn, Miami made the right choice with what was left in this year's thin crop of coaches.

The Dolphins know as much as anyone that first-time head coaches are a roll of the dice. Sometimes you land John and Jim Harbaugh. Sometimes you get Tony Sparano. That is why the Dolphins first tried to hire a proven commodity with Jeff Fisher.

But Miami's turnaround is just as much about the quarterback as it is the next coach. You need both to be successful. McCoy worked with Dolphins quarterback Matt Moore in Carolina. Barring a significant trade up in the draft, McCoy and Moore most likely would have led the Dolphins in 2012.

In contrast, Philbin has the potential to make this hire a two-package deal from Wisconsin. Philbin and Flynn could be the exciting, fresh start the Dolphins need. Think Green Bay's high-powered offense meets South Beach. Sounds intriguing, right?

The Dolphins, known for their dysfunction, did their best with what was left on the market. They missed out on the home run (Fisher). But they still hit a double (Philbin) that potentially could be stretched to a triple if Miami's new coach uses his influence to snag Flynn in free agency. With Philbin now in Miami, you have to peg the Dolphins as one of the favorites in the Flynn sweepstakes.

Philbin and Flynn are not New England’s power pair of Tom Brady and Bill Belichick. But it would be a good start back to respectability for the Dolphins.

I'm just "not' sold on Matt Flynn, he will want big bucks and I just do not think he's that good. Flynn looks like a system QB so buyer beware, I think we have seen that movie before.........and it was pure crap :-(

flynn will be franchised. if you want to pony up picks you can have him. see matt castle

Well, if the system that Philbin will be installing is the one that Flynn is successful in where is the drawback?

First order of business: Get your staff together and go to Senior Bowl. Flynn will be a decision made by him and his agent at the appropriate time. Miami will no doubt be first on the docket, not because Philbin is here, but because his agent (if he plays it like others) will use Miami to land a big contract. The reality of this will set in in a few weeks.

Note: If flynn goes to Cleveland or Washington, then it gives us a better chance to go up and get RGIII. Who's contract ends up bigger in the end? RGIII or Flynn?

Totally agree. Im not sold either, but landing someone with his potential without giving up picks or trading players makes it easier to stomach if he sucks. I think we should grab him and let him compete with Moore and maybe draft a developmental QB in the later rounds. Philbin obvisouly knows him very well and will likely dictate his fate as a Dolphin. So if we pick him up, we can feel pretty confident that his is going to be solid........because at least Philbin is.

nobody knows flynn better than philbin. if he thinks flynn is the real deal, then we will sign him. if not, then he wont.

Would you rather have a system qb or a Brady type which make the people and system work for him. System qb = bad qb

Huh? Overall sure. But not if the system fits the QB.

I know you don't want to hear this but Brady (yes a hall of famer) is arguably a system QB. I think Cassel proved that system is QB friendly with all the YAC they get there.

If Philbin installs a system that fits Flynn why would Flynn equate to a bad QB?

I get your point if we keep the current system as I do believe is a benefit of that system and the talent in GB.

The problem is Miami doesn't have the same personel that GB has even if we did install his system. Besides, Moore also showed if we decide to air it out he can rack up TD'S in a hurry as well. The only difference is GB didn't stop piling on points like Miami did when they got the lead.

Bring in Flynn and let him compete as long as it isn't for a crazy salary. I think Miami would make a HUGE mistake if they give him guaranteed starter contract

I remember bringing up trading for Flynn last season, and some people thought I was crazy...even better...we can sign him as a FA now

I like this write up, but I wouldn't consider Fisher a homerun. More excited for Philbin.
