I heard Joe Rose say that sources have told him that Jason Allen cannot play safety in the NFL, why I'm not sure. He also said that Allen's ability to play well at cornerback was questionable, and that if that fails as well then you have a whole lot of nothing. Does anyone have more details that I might have missed?

Allen will turn out fine. :-)

I hope so, I found Rose's comments to be a bit odd. Maybe Allen just can't grasp the defensive responsibilities of safety, I can't think of any other reason.

Exactly mate.

Im sure a new coach will come in and get the best out of him. Maybe he is a CB from now on, or will step up and take a Saftey starting spot. Im sure he will be ok though.

Things dont look good for Jason Allen. I think that one of the reasons that Saban left was because he knew that a lot of these guys he invested so highly in were not going to make it. Jason Allen is one, Daunte is another.

Wish Joe had elaborated. Maybe his hip problems hinder his lateral movement. It was an odd pick. Let's hope he works out.

Saban's D is complex, the next coach might need to make
it easier for Jason ,so he is reacting rather than thinking.

Please elaborate on Jason Allen.

Jason Allen appears to have the physical tools to be a fine safety... he showed some amazing closing speed and some good hitting, in the limited playing time he got. I'd be interested in hearing more about why this "source" thinks he can't play.

I'm beginning to think that Saban's communication is poor. I don't think his system is that complex if college players can pick it up.

My opinion about Jason Allen (or any high draft pick) is that if he doesn't make ANY sort of impact his first season, then don't expect a very good player. Granted, there are occasions when there are exceptions. But typcically if you don't see some flashes immediately, then it's fair to say that you shouldn't expect a whole lot. Football players who will be above average to great at this level show hints of what's to come. Allen has shown nothing. Hopefully he will become at least average. The guy is making a TON of money and is not, and will not be (IMO) worth what he is making.

Jason Allen has done nothing to prove he was worthy of being a first round pick....if you can't play better than the garbage that starting today for the Dolphins....you better have a degree to fall back on.

I agree. I think a lot of defensive mistakes this year were made due to players "thinking" about what they should be doing instead of being able to react and do it.

I don't see him being a bust. He'll be a solid safety for years.

What is Jason Allen? Is he a corner or is he a safety.

Corners are 180-200lbs.
Safeties are slow overweight corners, 200-220 lbs.
*********
Allen is 220 lbs. At his weight, he is a safety. I guess he was having trouble learning the safety position... so he got moved to corner. Then they realized... hey, this guy is too slow(heavy). So he was moved back to safety.

Renaldo Hill from LSU was a former corner who converted to safety. I guess he learned quicker than Allen, so he started this year.
**********
My guess is that Allen is on par with Renaldo Hill. Allen was not ready to play when the season started. It is an unanswered question whether Allen improved. Is he ready to play now?

Why Did Hill keep his job:
A. Hill is better than Allen?
B. LSU favoritism?
C. consistancy-sake?

The answer is unclear.
