I took this off of a Bills website... I tought it was an interesting read considering Joe Rose's connection to the Dolphins....

Last week I wrote about what Butch Davis had to say on Holcomb during Hank Goldberg's show and I'll get to today's comments from him but Joe Rose (TE for Miami from 1980 to 1985 and with the Rams in 1987) is a morning radio show host here, the local color commentator for Miami and had Sam Wyche on this morning so let's start there.
In a nut shell Coach Wyche had no comment on who would be starting. He did say how much he likes Losman and that Losman is going to have a great future in the NFL. He also said some nice things about Holcomb and his abilities. Very vanilla when it came to the Bills QB situation.
What I found interesting wasn't so much his comments (I did enjoy his interview) but what Joe Rose had to say immediately after then ended the call. He said the secret is out that Holcomb would be starting even though the coaches still won't say one way or the other and he added that Miami is preparing for either QB to play.
While the secret is out isn't real intersting, we all know, the interesting thing to me was that he added he spoke to some people in Buffalo last night and he was told that a few of the veteran players went to Coach Mularkey after he announced on Monday Losman would still be the starter.
According to Rose those veterans told Coach Mularkey how unhappy they were about it. They insisted a change to the veteran be made for the Miami game. They also, according to Rose, told Mularkey if he didn't make the change he was going to lose the team. That the veteran players felt a switch to Holcomb had to be done to give them a better shot to win and that the coach was already in danger of losing the team because a switch hadn't been made yet.
I have to admit Eric Moulds was the first person who popped into my head. In my opinion this is the sort of thing he would do. He would go to the coach and make a threat about losing the team for the season because he is unhappy. Kind of a surprising move in that switching quarterbacks would mean Moulds insisted on having another guy throwing to him in Buffalo. That has been one of his biggest complaints a Bill, the lack of consistency at quarterback.
The wheels in my head were turning though. Rose said veteran players which, obviously means more than one, went to Mularkey and demanded the change. Evans is only in his sophomore season but could he have tagged along? He isn't a rookie so that makes him a veteran. What about Campbell who was expecting to see the ball more this year but only has three catches. This is all of the receptions recorded by Bills tight ends so far this season. I also entertained the idea of a defender or two but they are struggling themselves. It would take some serious moxie for a defender to call for a quarterback change. If there was a defender or two it could only be, in my estimation Milloy, Adams or Vincent. Anyone else I can't really see going to the coach like that.
Never the less the change has been made. The receivers seem happy about it in their interviews and whoever it was who more or less threaten the coach better perform on the field and be very careful they what they wished for doesn't come back to them.
Coming back to the player and careful about what we are getting with this move brings me back to Coach Davis this morning. He was, as usual, a great interview to listen to on a Friday morning.
Hank Goldberg's first question was about Holcomb and the switch. What could the Bills expect from Kelly and what to expect from defenses facing him.
Initially, as any good speaker, he started off with a complement. He stated that Kelly has always prepared to start every game. That he is extremely intelligent. He then said Kelly, if he gets who, can put up some big numbers on any defense. I had to laugh when he then called him a "poor man's Don Strock."
Well that sounded pretty good to me but I was waiting for the part I knew was coming and it came. He then went on to say the thing about Kelly is you always know where the release is coming from when he's in the game. He's not very athletic, would never be called mobile and that a defense always know where to find him because it will be 5 or 6 yards straight back.
He then expanded into he is very susceptible to the blitz. That his limited mobility keeps him from being able to roll out, avoid a strong rush and it takes a lot of things out of what you can do when you game plan. He added that if the receivers don't get open quick it will be trouble because all offensive lines break down in pass protection and he won't be able to buy himself extra time.
As I said he's a good speaker so he finished with a couple of more complements in that he throw a frozen rope. That his arm will remind people of Bledsoe's but so will his mobility. I think he was leaning more towards the mobility again.
Davis also said he had won the starting job in 2003 and in 2004 in Cleveland because he was such a smart player and a good passer. Finally, he finished with Holcomb had a couple of bad breaks as a starter, the helmet incident that cost the Browns a game, injuries, injuries to his teammates, games where he put up big numbers in losing efforts but if he had been able to play consistently and stay on the field that he (Davis) would still be coaching in Cleveland today.
So that's it. The "veteran players" got what they demanded. The coaches made the switch. The fans are going to see a guy who is capable of getting hot and putting up big numbers but is about or less mobile than Bledsoe. We are going to have a "poor man's Don Strock" starting. The Bills offensive line better be solid. The receivers better do a better job of winning the individual battles and getting open quick. The Dolphins, who have been blitzing like crazy, are going to be coming from everywhere and trying to meet in one spot, the center of the pocket.
I hope things go well. I hope and want Holcomb to have a great day and the Bills to have a dominating win against an arch rival.
However, if the play calling hasn't changed, the receivers play as well as they did for Losman and the pass blocking isn't better I fear it could be a long day for the Bills and Holcomb's backside is going to be sore.
