Has anyone else noticed like I have that it seems Joey puts the ball way out there long before RB or SM are handed the ball? Seems to me he is not letting the RB's come to the ball, and it is forecasting to the opposing defense that a play is going to be a run. Granted, it may only give them a 1/2 second edge, but in the NFL a half second can mean the difference between a good gain and a loss IMHO. Anyone else feel this way? Would like to hear what you guys think.

A valid point that might have some credence, but this thread will turn into a Joey v. Daunte thread in seconds.

Marino did the same thing.

Sometimes we can use that to our advantage. If, for example, Joey shows the ball to the RB (and the defense) and he's able to do play-action off that, it could bode well for us.

Let's just worry about the real problem in the run game...or OL opening holes for Ronnie on a consistent basis...

yeah....lol...go watch DC do a hand-off...then tell me which one's worse.... I already have my own opinion....:)

I'll never forget Daunte faking the reverse 1st play of the Houston game.

Marino sent a stamped self addressed letter about hand-offs. Seriously, his hand-offs were tipped instantaneously.

Boomer Esiason was the master of the play-fake.

what a stupid stupid playcall...our biggest problem was our o-line couldn't even provide TWO SECONDS of protection, and idiot Mooooolarkey calls a play that takes five seconds to work....

good point, how freakin hard is it to handle the rock they way your supposed to,,i want to see proffessional quarterbacking from both daunte and joey and that includes the ability to be deceptive and intelligent when it comes to that part,,see peyton, hasselback, and brady for instruction

Boomer was very good, but I'd have to go with Peyton right now. I think he's the master of the play fake (although it was much more powerful when they had Edge).

I also think it can be used to his/our advantage for play fakes as long as he does it the same way for play fakes. One of the problems with Marino (maybe the only problem :D) was that his play fake handoff was so much different than an actual handoff. With Peyton, for instance, his action is the same regardless.

As a Lions fan, I pursued this line of thought while he was in Detroit, but Joey STINKS at play action. It's frustrating to watch.

Yes I have noticed it. Marino did the same thing. I remember my first couple years working at QB, I did the same thing. You're supposed to hold the ball into your chest as long as possible, unless you're running a counter then you're supposed to be tricking the defense anyway.

Harrington definitely telegraphs his handoffs, maybe it helped against the Bears because they're over agressive at it is, but overall you don't want that at all.

Sometimes yes, but you can pull off a good play fake using the correct technique as well. You really want consistancy, people used to complain about Marino's handoffs quite a bit, but he was THE MASTER passing QB of ALL TIME so you got over it. Harrington isn't exactly Marino in any facet of the game, even avoiding sacks ;)

Yes, it was embarassing from every aspect...just another one of those WTF  moments

I think Steve DeBerg was the best at play action. Esiason was great also. Right now Manning is probably the best, although he sometimes sells the run to early. As for Marino, he didnt need to be a master at deception because of his quick release. He needed far less time then most QB`s to get a pass off.

Are you refering when JH puts the ball way out there and shows it in one direction and then goes the other way? If you are, then that is by design.
