For those of you who jumped on the bandwagon about the Joey Porter signing being a bad signing last year cause the guy is washed up. First off, the guy is 30 and He is a linbacker. His skills haven't diminished. He may have been a little slow AT THE BEGINNING of the year because of his knee surgery and lack of reps in camp, but the guy is fine. He was played out of position last year and really played well down the stretch, In additon, CAlvin Pace got considerably more money this year at the same position. Calvin Pace has been in the league for 5 years and has only had ONE season that he played well. Porter has been a probowler.

Here's the thing tho, the rumors started right away with Porter after his signing BECAUSE of the fact he was let go by Pittsburgh - well they let all of their guys go in free agency - look at Faneca this year. Then everybody jumped on the bandwagon and wanted somehow to connect HIS signing to the troubles of the TEAM. makes ZERO sense.

Personally I think the Steelers let him go cause they had Harrison on the bench behind Porter and needed the guy to get on the field. If you didn't see him play the guy was a beast last year. He seems to have filled Joey Porters role OFF the field as well.....but instead of knocking out a lineman he decided to take it out on his girlfriend check it out....

The Steelers let Porter go because they felt he was starting to decline and he suffered a few injuries that they felt were going to contribute to his decline. True Joey was bothered by a knee injury early on and I'll even give you that he was playing out of position as the SLB, but the guy is a loudmouth, he didn't even know the playbook until well into the season and I lost any respect that I had for him after I heard how he blasted Cam at the end of the season. A leader doesn't call out his coach and scream obscenities at him, a leader takes it behind closed doors and leads by example. Porter is not a leader.

sheeesh!!!

i GAINED respect for joey after going off on that turd cameron.

the guy was week, petty, jeleous and a coward!!!

and put this team YEARS behind.

joey, once the defesne was losened up and playing more of
last years style, came on like gangbusters. he had a bad knee
and then was placed out of position in a silly, predictable
defense and of course non of this was told to him at signing
time that the defnse was changing and his assignments were
not going to be the same.

EVERYONE was pissed on that team from about the 3rd game on.

joey is a good LB and wont be subject to the same nonsense he
was under cam/ran last year.

Personal feelings aside, this is not how you act towards your HC. The HC deserves to be respected simply because he's the HC. It's pretty funny to me that people applaud Porter for calling Cam a coward. Porter was the one who needed all of his buddies with him before he was willing to start trouble with that Bengals lineman. Who's the real coward?
Bottom line is that you don't disrespect your coach like that.

Well, I was one of those pointing out that Porter had not produced at the $30m level he is getting paid, but he did improve as the season went on, probably due to more fully recovering from his injury, that said, if you check the numbers, I think Joey still made more than Pace. Of course, Pace situation is irrelevant since he's with the Jests... The thing is, he was expected to come in and immediately impact this D and that didn't happen. Hopefully, as other have said, Tunaland will get him into the right position and impacting the D in the more positive way than he did last year. After all, he ain't getting paid less this year...

As to why the Steelers let him go, if you look at their history, that's the way they do things there and it works. They draft well, utilize the guy the best they can, and when the young guy is ready, they move out the older guy, usually in the 29-31 yr range. It's a great system and has worked well for them. Fortunately for us, I also think that JP has a few more years of production left, but we have to get it right here first...

Well haven't seen the contracts..and perhaps you are correct about the numbers...I guess it depends on the years.... Joey got 30million with 20 million guaranteed.... Pace got 42 million with 22 million guaranteed. I guess it depends on the years and how they were structured.... I think Joey's contract was perhaps a year maybe two years shorter? I believe they are probably somewhat comparable. I'm not sayiing that perhaps Porter got maybe a little too much money either. The fact is we did need another rush linebacker (granted we didn't use him right - and perhaps he didnt know the playbook well enough). That position is hard to fill, and the players available (because the seldom will be) get a premium.

the thing that i will find hilarious is when we go to the 3-4 and porter gets to play his natural position is how fast all the haters will jump right back on his manhood. there u go mods no warning needed i didnt say d**k

Lol...yeah I think Porter will actually play well for us this year. We will see

That's funny. That's when I lost respect for Porter.

Why didn't Porter yell at Capers? I mean, Cam Cameron has zero background when it comes to defense. So I'm pretty sure Cam wasn't the one who lined Porter up as a defensive end. I'm pretty sure Cam wasn't the one who misused Porter, yet Porter giving him flack.

Letting go of players instead of overpaying them? Good system, IMHO. Seems to work pretty well for the Patsies too.

Which would seem to indicate that they would have had to overpay Porter to keep him.

I'm not quite sure what your point is here. Are you implying that his worse behavior somehow justifies Porter's not-quite-as-bad bad behavior?

It was probably a good thing for Porter then. Because any strong coach would have, at the very least, docked Porter a game's pay for staying in Pittsburgh after his request to do so was turned down (whereas a good leader would have obeyed the HC's rules regardless of how much he might have disagreed with them).

When the HC is making stupid calls and decisions every single week somebody needs to have the balls to call him out. Only idiots blindly follow other idiots. He should have been blasting Capers as well. He was ill used most of the season.

Joey porter has never said he is a leader, the guy is a pretty good linebacker when healthy though.

Not saying letting players go instead of overpaying them ISNT a good way to go. The fact is WE haven't drafted well enough to do that, and in this case Porter filled a need. Did we overpay? Perhaps. Although I would have to even question that given todays market and the fact we were coming off of a top 4 defensive performance. It seemed at the time, another player to rush the QB would make a big difference. We had no depth though and DL/ MLB/S became a problem due to age and injury. So for us the decision made sense for us (and I'll remind everyone that they LOVED it last year). Given Harrisons production it also made sense for the Steelers.

I was joking about Harrison filling Porters off the field stuff. Thought it was somewhat humorous the guy that filled his shoes ends up doing something worse than Porter did last year! THAT"S THE POINT. it was just ironic....

i think we should go back to 4-3
