The NFL apparently isn't only interested in curbing overly aggressive hits and tackles -- it is also interesting in getting rid of overly aggressive trash talk as well.

The league hit Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter with a $7,500 fine for unsportsmanlike conduct during the fourth quarter of Sunday's loss to the Patriots. Porter was fined specifically for verbally abusing the opponent after the play was over.

Maybe they should serve tea between plays with a cookie tray to help the players reamin friendly. We should just take the Pads off and start sewing classes instead. You obviously can't talk or hit or tackle or be upset about the game on any level....so whats the point?

Just wondering, did any of the Pats get fined after they played the Chargers and we taunting LT in the middle of the field? I don't think so, but our players get fined for trash talking in the heat of the game.

Or, on the other hand, one could just run and tackle, play within the rules and, not open one's fat yap. When one is being paid millions of dollars to do just that, I would think one could do that.

GB,i generally agree with you on most things you bring up in here, but on this one,i disagree....talking smack is apart of the game of football...always has been for as long as i can remember...whether before games, during,or after...it's always been that way...throwing fines for talking smack is taking a lot of the fun out of it IMO...and if Roger Goodell keeps going like he is,he'll go down as one of the worst NFL Commissioners ever in my opinion...he needs to pull his mouth off Robert Krafts knob and at least act like an NFL Commissioner and not a puppet...

Was Moss pushing off on 2 TD's woithin the rules? Was a player throwing punches at a player with a missing helmet because of illegal hands to face within the rules? I'm sure it was for Pats and their fans it was but they don't get fined.

I certainly respect your opinon. Certainly smack talk is a part of the game but, it's a question of when it goes to far. Obviously, it's being called a great deal closer *Point of emphasis* these days.

Pushing off is or is not a OPI depending on the ref's judgement. This has nothing to do with Godell or fines or Porter, or anyone else. It is or it is not a penalty.

As far as the punches being thrown, that is somthing for the Dolphins to take up with the leauge should they so choose to do so. Godell has stated his position on the matter, so, it's now open to appeal under NFL workplace rules. Do I personally think Light should've been fined more or punished more? Yes, I do. I'm just not upset about it, because millionares being fined ranks around zero on my care-o-meter.

I know you're mad because you percieve that the Dolphins were wronged. That's just the way it goes somtimes.

THe bigger question is, now that they are fining for words, are they going to make a list explaining what is leagal and what is not? It seems like this kind of thing is just asking for abuse.

Whats next, thought crime? =)

So if Porter gets fined 7500 for verbal abuse, shouldnt Crowder have gotten 7500 since apparently, he verbally abused Light.

That or the commissioner is turning the sport into a sissy league.

That's one way of looking at it. You know, as I recall it in all my years playing the game, up through HS, I talked junk exactly one time. I completely lost my composure and wanted to fight him right then and there. The rest of the time, I just came in, came out, did my job and that was that. I guess I'm just old school, but, I never depended on my mouth to play the game for me.
