Wow...

I guess I just forgot what kind of player we acquired this off season. Recalling now that when I first heard the news, I jumped straight in the air with my hands on my head in disbelief. Followed by running throughout my dorm in excitement! We just signed Joey Porter...the face of the Steelers defense!! Since then...it settled in and I kind of forgot of the impact this guy is going to make on our already top5 D. I forgot that last season we did not have this play maker who will undoubtedly take our defense to the next level (the elite)...and quite possibly the best in the league.

I just got done watching an NFL Network video reliving the 2005 Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl season. It was narrated by our boy "Peazy" (Joey Porter) throughout the entire hour. After watching that video...boy am I excited now more than ever! The Steelers were something special that year, thats for sure...but Joey was a BIG PIECE of the puzzle! Here are some things I took away from the video (I highly recommend you do your best to watch this if at all possible)

The guy is by definition what it is to be a leader, on the field, in the locker room, and in the media. He will be an excellent presence overall...and you can bet he will bring a lot of media attention to our D - and quickly! That can only = good things for the rest of our players on D...we have never had a distraction worthy of taking the attention away from Zach Thomas and Jason Taylor. We have that now, not just on the field...but almost just as important - OFF it as well! Let me explain...he will create a new intensity with our division rivals...he is notorious for his trash talking and that will not stop I can assure you. He will get into the opposing teams minds, and create an inspiration amongst his teammates. He will trash talk, and the media will eat it up! Every week it was something new in 2005, some new conflict he had created. I can distinctly remember him and Chad Johnson that year (they were going at it during warm-ups and all throughout the game), later in the year it was another Bengels player (the one he fought with I think), going into the Colts/Steelers playoff game he directed his trash talk at THE ENTIRE Colts offense!!
"They don't like to play smashmouth football, they just want to trick you"
- that is a BOLD statement to make considering the Colts were undefeated almost the entire year...undeniably the best Offense in the NFL. Before the Superbowl he got into it with Jeremy Stevens, calling him "soft" and created a personal conflict once again that led to distractions for the seahawks and guess what - he backed his talk up in-game! He makes his teammates step up their play...they stand by him..support him and rise to the level he knows they are capable of playing at...he almost makes them feel obligated to step up their play...this trait he has, this presence and trash talking personality cannot go unnoticed! Other players will feed off of it and thus far based on the quotes I have heard from our D players, it seems like it has already begun. I CANNOT wait to see him go at it with the Patriots/Jets/Bills every week with this intensity...he will bring more passion to our division games.

Now...I haven't even addressed his play. The guy was such a big piece of their puzzle that year, that without him...I am almost certain they would not have made it to the Super bowl. Watching the highlights of the Colts/Steelers playoff game made me remember just how crazy that game was, and how when the game was ON THE LINE and the Colts had a chance to tie or take the lead Joey Porter busted through one of the leagues most elites O-Lines and sacked Peyton Manning BACK TO BACK, TWICE - ruining their entire drive.
If it wasn't for Jeromes fumble in the redzone, Joey had single handedly ended the game. This guy was such a force to be reckoned with...I just don't think the Steelers are going to be the same without him...regardless of how easy it is for LB's to excel in their system.

Back to that leadership trait, every time you saw footage of in the huddle or in the locker room...guess who was speaking? Thats right, our boy Joey. Its impossible not to get hyped up in his presence. He is contagious - and with JT and Zach...2 words - OH MY come to mind

I am sold on him. Screw the 2006 season - the Steelers as a TEAM sucked...it was not his fault. He was never playing at 100% and they fell victim to the post-super bowl syndrome most teams endure...this guy will take our D to guaranteed top5 status...and from there the sky is the limit! The Steelers say he is on the down side of his career, that is BOGUS. He is 30 years old. Thats easily 3 more years of prime football, and that seems to be our time line anyway with our aging D-line and Taylor/Thomas...this is what he is here for - a Superbowl run not 3+ years down the road, but starting now!

Hearing the good news about Travis Daniels and the Allen brotha's I am now convinced our secondary will finally rebound and hold their own this year...they will make plays - thats INT's folks...something we have not seen since Pat/Sam. Not to mention JPeazy and ZT make their share of INT's every year...how bout our DPOY, well it would be awfully hard to have a repeat of last year but with so many different threats on our D its certainly not impossible for plays to be happening all over the place - we will be dangerous ALL OVER the field. Crowder is coming into his 3rd season and is ready to shine, Yerimiah Bell has emerged as our playmaking safety...all of the pieces have fallen in place...its up to Dom Capers to make it happen, and I am ecstatic that we got him in contract for years to come!

We were a very good defense last year, but with the signing of Joey Porter we will become GREAT. He will raise the level of play of everyone by his presence alone, his leadership in and out of the locker room, and of course his big plays at critical times. Not to mention he provides a new weapon for Capers to utilize and create havoc for opposing teams. I think we will look back at this offseason as one of the best in a LONG time, this acquisition on defense cannot be underestimated...except by other teams! If you're not a believer now, you will be soon!

Steelers LB Larry Foote, quoted in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on losing close friend and teammate Joey Porter to the Dolphins:

"As a player and teammate, you never want to lose that type of guy. When you get a guy like Joey Porter, you're not just paying for his services on the field, but his impact on the team and his influence. He never led us in the wrong direction. When you have a leader and a guy who has influence on a team, it can be negative or positive, but he was positive. He kept everyone together. He was a friend to everyone  young and old, from practice squad players to superstars. He kept us all humble. I just say there's only one Joey Porter; no one can do what he does. That's what we're going to miss, we're going to miss that a lot."

Oh man, that video just gives me goosebumps every time. The players are behind him 100% as you can see...they stepped up their play, he created an environment and an idea that they thrived off of all post-season long...and they were Champions. This clip and the one at the Super bowl in the huddle where he is yelling "ITS OUR TIME! WE'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS MOMENT, NOW LETS GO TAKE IT!" something like that...just cant wait to see that intensity brought to our D.

dang joey looks pretty ripped in that vid.........anyways i totally agree with you man joey is a playmaker and we are gunna have 3 on our defense possibly 4 if bell continues to improve or someone else emerges. things are lookin good on D!

I think there is an even bigger factor then sacks.

Joey can cover TE's/Rb's in coverage which have severly exploited Miami over the years. We haven't had a great coverage LB in god knows how long.

Good point.

I think part of the motivation behind Joey's release was due to the coaching change in Pittsburgh.
Its hard for a new coach to take control when you have a huge presense in the locker room.
Coming in to Miami, he will be a leader among other established leaders such as JT & Zach.

I wonder how well Joey would be getting along with the new HC in Pittsburgh if he was still there. I hear he's running a very tough training camp. Joey may be having some problems with the heat in Miami, but he'd definitely be having a grueling camp if he was still in Pittsburgh.

What Joey might really be having some trouble with is learning Caper's system. Just about everybody has trouble absorbing all of it. He's probably going to need a lot of extra time with the coaches, film room work, walk thrus, and study sessions. That's one reason he's getting paid the big bucks. He needs to get through this learning period so he doesn't make those mental mistakes that Cam is always talking about.

Once he learns that system good, I'm sure he'll be fine ... hopefully he's back to being the Joey of 2005. I read that Joey had some injury problems last year so that's probably what caused a decline in his performance. I want Capers to make sure he knows that system. Give him some pop quizzes or something. Get his wife to work with him like Beck's wife is. Whatever it takes. We need him bad this year when we take on teams like the Patsies. We can't afford to have missed assignments with Brady and the receivers they have this year.

A healthy Joey who's in great physical shape who knows that system well = a bigtime Dolphins linebacker group feared by every team we face.

[mod]Please do not circumvent the profanity filter[/mod]
ive watched porter for the past 5 years every game since i live in pittsburgh, and let me tell you he is something else. he busts his *** on every single play

What I really think Joey is going to bring to this defense is somebody that is just a jerk. JT and Zach are great players by all means, but they are just nice guys. I mean you figure that JT and Tom Brady are good friends and I just dont see how that can be, I know that its evident that JT has no problem sacking Brady, but I think he would also hit him harder if they wern't friends. I think what Joey brings is that he isn't out there to make friends, he's there to knock your head off and then kick it 20 yards down field. Joey is going to bring a mean attitude to this defense and hopefully it filters down into everybody else. Maybe he can also teach some of the younger players how to trash talk good?

He might just try to kick a 50 yard field goal with it.

I think Joey is coming into a great situation with the Dolphins. When you line up against the Dolphins D who do you block? Do you worry about Zach the most consistent tackler in team history:confused: Do you worry about JT the best defensive player in the leauge:confused: Do you worry about Joey the versatile seasoned veteran with the big mouth:confused: And what about Crowder the new guy who can make plays:confused:

Plus these guys should have another excellent D-Line in front of them, plus the plays where JT is D-Line, sort of:confused:

Opposing QB's reaction looking at this D before the snap:confused:
