I am a Lions fan who has watched almost every game Joey played the past 4 seasons, and out of curiousity I have watched him play in your first two pre-season games. I have to give you folks some info and perspective.
First of all, Joey can make some excellent throws. We wouldn't have wasted four years with him if he couldn't. His talent sometimes can be tantalizing because when he gets time to throw, his arm can look very, very good and he can make some very difficult throws.
And here's some good news for you -- you can already tell that he has more of a pocket from which to throw on this Dolphins offense than he ever had in Detroit. Also, your offensive scheme is probably better suited to Joey -- he can throw downfield more to more reliable receivers. He should do better with you guys if he has to play.
But here's the problem and you're seeing it without noticing it too much these first two games (because he has made some great throws already in pre-season) -- Joey's inconsistent and he misses easy throws on key third and medium situations often. Against the Jags, go back and check that second series when it was third and four or five -- he flat out missed an easy throw to the receiver in the flat (he threw it behind a receiver who had a step and literally into the CB's hands). Yesterday against the Bucs, on the play before the play where they criticized Rusell for not running hard enough, another dolphin receiver had his man beat one on one deep to the endzone and Joey badly overthrew the ball, missing a great TD opportunity.
This is the kind of thing we lived with over and over. Joey makes beautiful throws when you think, goddamn, if he can make that throw he must be a top tier guy. But it's all the missed throws that add up during an entire game when you see that your offense is stalling, especially at the other team's 35 or 40 yard line, that critical last ten yards where you get into scoring position.
Two other issues to be aware of -- he's usually great at the end of first halfs -- the defense plays a little prevent and he relaxes and moves the team down. He doesn't usually come through with the TD at the end of the games, but he often gets a drive at the end of the first half.
Second, he gets too nervous and panics in the face of the blitz, something he usually doesn't have to deal with too much in pre-season, so he always looks great in pre-season. He's rarely ever been strong against a tough defense. Of his 15 or so wins in 50 some odd starts, three were against the Cardinals at home. I liked Joey in a lot of ways, but you have to pay attention to those missed throws that kill drives and his happy feet with a tough defense, before you get too excited.
