This is the kind of coaching that John Beck...
has had the privileged of having the past two years under Bronco Mendenhall. This is kind of thing movies are made of. He bought into this band of brothers hook line and sinker, and man what a difference it made. Here is an excerpt of someone sharing their experience hearing Bronco speak at a Fireside in Arizona. Pay special attention to story number 3...
"... Anyway, on to more important things...his message. I have been a fan of Bronco ever since he came to BYU. This is mostly because my two cousins on the team had nothing but praises for him. Anyway, he spoke about being a disciple of Christ and that he thought that people who were afraid to let other know what they stood for lacked courage and faith. He was bold. He told a few stories and I'll only share three.
1. He said he was biking in the mountains of montana on a 15% uphill slope and that his MPH meter read 0.00/mph. He was going so slow because it was so steep. He said he heard a motorized vehicle come up behind him and it was a jeep that sped past kicking up dirt and dust in his face. He said it was pretty upsetting, but then he saw one of the guys in the jeep raise a fist in the air and shout, "Way to go! Keep on going, man!" (or something like that). He said it lifted his spirit and he was very thankful that this guy that didn't know him was showing him such great support.
2. He spoke about when he was being interviewed by Elder Eyring for the head coaching position. He said he only remembered one question and that was "Is the church true?". That's the only thing he remembered. Then, after the inteverview, Elder Eyring said, "ok..then you're our man!". He then asked Elder Eyring to give him a blessing. Elder Eyring walked around him, put his hands on his head and gave him the blessing. Bronco said that that's when he received instruction on how to do his job. I think that's where he came up with the team mission statement. He said his first day at his office, he knelt on his knees and didn't get up for a couple of hours. He said someone knocked on the door and it was Lavell. He also spoke about how he felt impressed to do a fireside in San Diego before the game there, but that the local church leaders told him they didn't want a fireside. He said, "OK". He regrets not acting upon that prompting and telling them that they were going to have a fireside no matter what. They got beat badly that game. The next game was the New Mexico game and that he made sure there was a fireside. He said that there were only 13 people in the audience and 50 players in the stands. They have gone 14-4 since doing firesides and he says he enjoys them more than games. He also, in a round-about way, criticized the fans for booing and not supporting the team when they were losing.
3. He told a story of a young player a couple years ago that had one hand/arm in a cast that wanted to do the eco-challenge. Bronco told him no because you need two hands for the swimming and uphill biking part. He asked every day for two weeks and bronco told him no every time. Finally bronco asked, "why? why do you want to do this?" "Because I believe. I believe we're going to be great."
Bronco let him do the eco challenge. He had to do the swimming with one arm and he hung the casted arm on the side of the pool and dragged it along the entire time. Took him a couple hours to do the swimming with one hand. He had serious problems doing the uphill biking part and so he had to do a weaving pattern that took many hours longer than normal. Bronco said that the tradition is that the entire team waits on top of sundance peak until every one is finished. He also said that no player that started the race has ever quit. Every one has finished. Anyway, in this case, it had been ten hours and the player still wasn't there. The winds were getting very gusty so he sent the players down on the ski lifts. He said he stayed at the top for another two hours before the casted player reached the top. He said that there were tears streaming down the player's face. Bronco asked him what was wrong and he said, "i thought you had left, too." It was pretty sad. This guy was heart-broken because the team left and didn't wait for him. I felt really bad for the guy. Bronco's response to him was, "I would never leave you."
What I took away from this meeting was that I need to be a better example to those around me. Also, that bronco is exactly that type of coach i have always wanted for BYU. BYU is going to be a consisten program and should finish every season ranked. We are so lucky to have bronco and it sure is a good time to be a cougar fan... "
Hopefully Beck can bring that same attitude and true care about his team mates into the huddles on Sundays as well as off the field.
