It has been close to a month since our draft, and it seems there are still many that are very bitter and upset that we did not take Quinn in the 1st, which is amazing because the more I read about Beck, the more excited I am to see this kid get in there and start learning.
-Height-
One of the big knocks on him is that he is not tall enough to succeed in the NFL, well seems a few Qbs in the NFL did not get a memo on that:
Brett Favre (6'2)
Mark Brunell (6'1)
Brodie Croyle (6'2)
Jeff Garcia (6'1)
Rex Grossman (6'1)
Jon Kitna (6'2)
J.P. Losman (6'2)
Steve McNair (6'2)
Tony Romo (6'2)
Charlie Batch (6'2)
Jake Delhomme (6'2)
David Garrard (6'2)
Kelly Holcomb (6'2)
Michael Vick (6'0)
..Oh, and of course..
Drew Brees (6'0)
All of these QBs have either started in the past, are still the starters, or are about to be the starter of their team, so height means nothing, and as far as size, many of these guys are in the 215 range, and Beck will still be able to put on a few pounds, so he could reach 220+ range.
-Age-
Age is another knock, well, consider that he will be 26 when we start the season, and if he is the type of QB that many think he is, he should be ready to start by mid to around the end of this season.
So for argument sakes lets just say he is ready in 2008, he will be 27, and most quality QBs are reaching 37 and beyond. So if he is the real deal, does anyone have any problem with 9-10 quality years from our QB...I don't. Besides Roger Staubach started for the Cowboys when he was 29 I believe, and he had a pretty good career.
-Talent-
What made most of those 6'2 or shorter QBs succeed is having that something that made them that much better then the rest (Great passer, amazing speed, very smart, leadership), Beck has shown to have great knowledge of the game, has a very quick release, great leadership skills, is very accurate, good arm (If you don't think he does, you need to see the video of him throwing a 75 yard pass) and above everything else is an immense desire to continue to be better.
Also has one more trait that every great QB has had, he does not like to lose, or even be losing. You would that is common with most QBs, but some QBs can handle losing, and not worry about it, but the great ones do worry, and refuse to let it happen again.
-Quinn vs Beck-
Here is where some have a big problem, they believe there is no way we will recover from not drafting the mighty Quinn. I liked Quinn also, and when he was still there at 9, I thought about how great Miami was going to be when we picked Brady, and was disappointed when the name Ginn was read....for about maybe 2 minutes, where I thought to myself, we just got the most explosive receiver/returner in this years draft, and there were still 4 other QBs that could be almost as good as Brady. After getting Beck, I started reading and hearing as much info on him as possible, and found out that many thought Beck and Quinn were very similar QBs, this made me even more happy, because we might have gotten someone as good as Quinn IN THE 2ND ROUND.
Quinn and Beck have very good leadership skills, both have adequate arms to make all the throws you hope for, Beck is more accurate, Brady seems to have a bit more speed, but Beck has better awareness of the pass rush around him, and can run for yardage if given the chance. Quinn does have his obvious advantages, He is taller w/ more size, and is 4 years younger then Beck, but as has wrote before, height and size is only an advantage when is measures the size of a players heart.
And article that was written said it best, when the writer wrote (not in so many words) " With Quinn you might be getting a self proclaimed superstar that thought he deserved to go #1, while with Beck you are getting a workhorse that said whichever team picked him was getting a player that was give his all for that team".
Again I repeat, I can't wait to see the progression of John Beck, because this guy has the tools, the hunger to continue to learn and be better, and the heart to refuse to fail. Sorry for the length, hope some of the big Brady fans, will start to give a Beck a chance to prove himself at least. :)
