Can you believe it, this is actually my first Ricky thread since this whole thing started.

Anyways, John Clayton gives a very indepth look into a lot of the question about the possible return of Ricky Williams.

http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=clayton_john&id=2066686

Take a look at this:
Q: Does the last year count on his contract, or is his deal extended a year further?
A: His contract stands as it was in 2004. Williams had three years remaining on his contract. He still has three years on his contract, meaning he's Dolphins property through 2007. This might come as a surprise, but there is a big question about the salary. His base salary under his contract should be $3.735 million, but he might only be eligible for a base salary of $540,000, the NFL minimum. One of the provisions of his contract was that if he breached the deal, as he did, his base salary would revert to the levels it was at under his deal with the Saints, which was the NFL minimum every year. If the Dolphins contend Williams should be at the minimum, he could file a grievance and fight for the bigger base salary. That would have to be settled later. But to be honest, that's a detail that isn't a priority at the moment. Williams contends he should have the $3.735 million salary. It's up to the Dolphins to push for their right to put the base salary at the minimum.
 Vet Minimum baby!

He WON'T be playing for vet min.
Even if the Fins have the right, technically, it won't happen.....

They will work out a restructured deal before he returns.

Very interesting...

I'm sure Saban will have the details on the contract pounded out before it will become a problem and before Ricky steps foot into the locker room...

No way will he want a distraction...

Can you imagine, Ricky coming back and then arguing about his pay while trying to make good with his teammates... No way it gets to that point.

Why would they restructure the deal? The deal was already restrutured. He breached the deal, but worst of all, he quit on his team and left them hanging out to dry. He doesn't even deserve the league minimum. If he plays, he should be forced to play without salary if he plays for Miami.

Yes he will. The phins have him by the balls. He'll play for the minimum this year to have the $8 million + judgement against him dropped and then the team will trade him next year.

Or Saban will just enforce it...trade him to another team for a 5th/6th and let that team deal with the renegotiating headache.

Then he won't play at all. We're not going to redo his contract if it already means he's going to be paid vet minimum (Which I alluded to yesterday. )

I say RW getting paid only vet minimum is RW' s problem - not ours. If he wanted to make big money playing football he shouldn't have quit. I fail to see why we should be doing him any favors (like giving him a raise). :shakeno:

If he wants to play it will be in a way that is convenient for us - and paying him more money when we don't have to is simply not in our best interest. We have a running back now. RW will just have to take what he can get!!

What if the Fins take the difference between the $3.75 mil (reported as his contractural salary for 2005) and the league minimum for two years as payment for the arbitrator's ruling ??? What do you all think of that...Now, I don't know how that would be counted against the cap..maybe Muck or one of the cap guys can tell us...

Best thing to do is to basically give Ricky about 700k a year in a deal to give him the 8.5m he owes us. That seams like the best solution for both Ricky and the team.

Let's think about it...ummm...h3ll no! He will play for league minimum AND pay back the $8.6 million or not play at all. We owe him no compromise. This is business now not friendship. He threw away his chance to be treated with respect. We should do what is best for us - and giving him a single dime more than we have to just makes no sense. It's our way or the highway.

They should just take his cheque and give it to the 9482984 kids the guy has had with different woman...at the rate he's going he'll be NBA ready pretty soon.

I'm don't pretend to be holier then thou or moralistic in any way, shape or form but a memo to Rick...it's called a condom.

There will be contract reworking with Ricky.

Im sure we will put tigher language in his contract, if not, what prevents him from retiring again?

Right now, from what I understand, his last contract was breached and we can go after the 8.6 million. I think there will be a compromise with Ricky and us.... if Ricky signs to a vet min salary for the rest of his contract, we will not go after the 8.6 million he owes us. Also right now, we cant take his 3.735 million cap number. We dont have the room for him unless we cut some players. If Ricky's role on the team is a #2 RB, then he is going to get paid like a #2 RB.

This way Ricky has a low cap number and can play 2 more years in the league before he can retire for good and Ricky gets to keep his money. Both sides are happy.

Excellent post!!!!! Thanks for the article Nublar! This is the best Ricky thread thus far... can't we just make the other 2,331 Ricky threads (in the last 2-3 days I might add) vanish and just keep this one?!?! :goof:
