John McClain: Benton is an outstanding coach and the Texans made a mistake

Wade Smith once had before Benton got his hands on him

yes! the same wade smith who got the boot at the same time his coach did.

coincidence? hmmmmm........ .

I definitely think he is an upgrade over Turner who never seemed to make the oline better

you really think there is a coach out there that could have "coached up" that line? really?

i dont believe in mosts of the coached up crap that gets thrown around. you can coach an individual who has a hitch in his technique, but if a WHOLE UNIT is bad, its over. time to re tool.

and benton had better talent on his line last year than we had and he got fired!!!

if benton doesnt get better players than he had in texas [lets not even talk about the players we had], he will be mentioned in the same breath as turner.

and as YOU said dloCkz, COACHES GET MORE BLAME THAN THEY DESERVE [sometimes]. i think turner just may be in that category.

I remember the story about McKinnie helping Brenner deal with the Patriots pass rush. McKinnie noticed a stunt they were running and showed Brenner how to stop it. He was here just a few weeks and coached a young player during the game better than Turner had all year.
In week 16 it was obvious the Bills knew the snap count and the Dolphins coaches had no answer. They were sitting ducks out there and it ended up getting the QB injured.
Elite players can make average coaches look great, but bad coaching can limit good players as well

Go Go.

Lazor better get get that crap gone gone.

And a good oline coach can't make superstars, but they can make below average-average....and average become slightly better than average. NE had a great oline coach for decades, and when olineman left and went elsewhere, they were never as good wherever else they were. Matt Light was owned by Jason Taylor....but he was an average at best LT but there were years he played at Pro Bowl level due to smarts and coaching.

was then texans o-line better than ours last year? year before?

would you say [as i do] they had better players on that line than martin, clabo, jerry, etc...?

i would.

yet, the big time texas coach got fired!!

so, not saying this guy isnt a good coach, i am saying that he had better talent in texas than we have here and was fired.

YOU HAVE TO HAVE PLAYERS!! PLAYERS MAKE COACHES LOOK REALLY GOOD!! you can't "coach up" a whole line and if you feel there is a need, time to re tool the players.

we already have a BIG TIME upgrade at lt and thats important. we have a pro bowl center [if he can keep the law at bay] and thats a real good start. but if people like clabo and and jerry are still on the line come opening day, benton isnt going to look so special and we will see the usual suspects come on the board with, "that benton guy sux!! i thought he was supposed to be so good. how come hickey hired him after the texans didnt even want him? i want ireland back, this is stupid, we had a good gm and ross ran him off".

TALENT PEOPLE, TALENT!!! and those who dont have it become scape goats.

To be fair to Benton, Bill O'Brien doesn't run the Zone Blocking Scheme and brought in his own guys. But it's been mentioned, not everybody can play in all systems. In our offense having guards that couldn't pull if their lives depended on it was a bad mistake.

But I'm also of the belief that Jim Turner was not ready for the jump from college.

he better be...cause we gonna likely ask him to make chicken salad out of chicken ****

NRA I'm not sure you know what you're talking about. You do know that Houston's new head coach doesn't run a zone blocking scheme. Why would be keep Benton who has been a zone blocking scheme coach his whole NFL career?

And talented players are important but if they don't fit the scheme there useless. It's not always about the most talented players, its about getting the right players. You're not going to get a 6'4" 330 lbs OG that runs the 40 in 5.4 seconds to pull and get to the second level in the ZBS and expect it to be successful yet you could put that same player in a power scheme and he'd be a stud.

If we could re-sign McKinney and sign Daryn Colledge (2 years each), then draft OL rounds 3-5 and let the best players start at LG/RG/RT I'd be a very happy camper.

resign Mc kinney

I have no idea why so many of you want to re-sign McKinney. The guy hasn't played for the Dolphins since 2006 and he's been out of the league since 2009...plus Seth McKinney wasn't very good to begin with.
