Calvin Johnson wants $30 mil guarantee from Lions?

The Lions' most difficult negotiations will be with their first-round pick, wide receiver Calvin Johnson . He was drafted second overall, and indications are agent Bus Cook -- whose stable of clients includes Packers quarterback Brett Favre -- will ask for a deal that includes close to $30 million in guaranteed money. -- Detroit News

Crazy admount of money. But he will probably get it.

I agree with Mindwarp and Stiches though, They need to be able to control it somehow. But you have to remember. Football contracts can be termed at anytime. I don't blame some guys making sure they get their gauranteed money.

That could be built into the slotted contracts though.

It can be. But like I said. I would want to make sure I have some guarante. If you look at the average NFL career, I would want to make sure if I get all beat up for a few season that me and my family are set.

Not that I think Johnson is only looking at a few season.

One thing everyone is overlooking:

You would have to pay me a hell of a lot to play for Detroit. It's pretty much saying that you are on a team that will never ever ever win anything.

 but they are going to win ten plus games so say Kitna!

I agree that contract are getting out of hand but I sort of understand the NFL players asking for more guaranteed money considering the very high risk of injury. It's the only sport where the majority of contracts are not guaranteed. I understand these guys wanting the guartanteed loot

I agree with Alex. Let's not forget that the Lions do have a bad history developing wide receivers. They drafted highly talented prospects in Charles Rodgers, Roy Williams, and Mike Williams in the last 5 seasons, and only one has paned out to be good.

As a receiver drafted in this Detroit organization, I too would try to get as much money as possible because there is very little guarantee that you can succeed with a team with the type of history they have developing receivers.

I think its INSANE how much these rookies are getting paid. Some of them turn out to be busts and your team has just invested $50-60 million on top picks. They should all prove themselves in their rookie seasons and then base their contracts on that. Some of these rookies that get drafted high in the draft make more money than deserving veterans.
