Jonnu Smith Trade? | Page 23 | FinHeaven - Miami Dolphins Forums

Jonnu Smith Trade?

The Dolphins have plenty of room to give him more money, hell an extension could possibly even reduce Jonnu's cap number. This is more of a "should they" than a "can they" situation. Dragging Tua and his contract into this doesn't compute.
It really does compute if you look at who you are replying to. I think Tua must have kicked sand in his eyes at the beach one time.

You were correct, it is 24.1 points per game with Tua at QB in 2024. That would be good enough for 9th in the league with a bottom 3 OL and a bottom ranked running game.

If the offense has been figured out, being top 10 is still pretty good. Just imagine what will happen if they get better OL play this year, looking at a top 5 offense that the league has figured out.

The highlighted part may be the most stupid comment I've read this week btw.
I can give a rats ass what you think! When the offense starts performing at a high level against good teams then get back to me!

This is like saying that Tyreek isnt much better than our previous WR's because our offense was different then. Tyreek also gets alot of screens and short passes, does that mean he isnt much better than previous WRs before him?

If anything, an improved Oline will HELP the passing game overall and I dont see how Jonnu still wont be involved. Jonnu still produced with Hill, Waddle and Achane last year. Im sorry but a improved Oline and NWI/Malik aren't going to take targets away from Jonnu. I think that is less likely to happen unless Jonnu gets hurt. Malik barely played last year and NWI could be another Cedrick Wilson Jr. So you are assuming those guys make huge improvements. But we DO KNOW that Jonnu was VERY GOOD in this offense.

Lmao is it? I’ll help you out it’s not.

Tyreek had a hall of fame résumé prior to joining Miami and is, has been and will always be a primary target in any offense he steps in. Jonnu is a journeyman tight end that was set to be a 4th option + next season.

Yes he had a great season and what was the result again? Oh yeah our worst offense under the McDaniel era. He was a product and a beneficent of everything that could go wrong going wrong ie no run game which resulted in higher screen attempts for him to try to substitute for a bad run game to draw safeties up and injuries to waddle and hill along with teams sitting in 2 deep. Maybe he has another great season if all goes wrong again but acting like he’s pivotal to Miami’s offense when they had the #1 offense in the league with Durham smythe as primary tight end is comical.

That’s on top of him going to be 31 and and asking for high end money. Even if you’re a 100% right he’s gone next season. I’m not giving a 31 year old journeyman who was nothing prior to playing only in this offense a multi year 10+ million dollar deal…

I actually am happy they are not just readjusting contracts like they did for hill, ramsey, and even tua extension. Those three contract adjustments or signings didn't work out. Hopefully they learned their lesson. I think Brandon Shore is all over this.

Here’s what I don’t understand about the situation:

If you were Jonnu Smith, and you finally landed in a situation where you blossomed and were able to become a significant part of the offense all while knowing that you signed a short-term deal, wouldn’t you look to extend your stay in that situation?

This could be as simple as Jonnu and his agent approaching the team and saying that he doesn’t want to hit FA again next year. Why not try to work something out where you can add another year?

We don’t know that he asked for a major salary increase.

Again, maybe there is more smoke than fire with this. Personally, I’d add a year to his deal. Just because you’re in some quasi- cap-resetting scenario, it doesn’t mean that you don’t need competent players. Jonnu Smith is not breaking the bank. He’s being paid what players making minimal contributions all over the league are being paid these days.

But it's not always about cap space. It's about what the owner is willing to spend. That has limits. Also, they might want to roll money into next season. Extend other people. Nothing is in a vacuum. Have a lot tied into one player, it trickles down. Decisions get harder.
I stand by my point, laying the purse tightening at Tua's feet is only part of the issue. Your original post made it sound like his contract was the only albatross the franchise is currently saddled with

Wrong! What happened to the deep passing game last year compared to the two seasons before that? It was non existent even when Tua played. Ya teams figured out how to defend the Dolphins regardless of how many points they averaged. Plus their offense still struggles against good teams.
How was he wrong? What does deep passing have to do with scoring offense? Being “figured out” doesn’t make sense if a team is top 10 in scoring.

Did you watch any KC or Bills games last season?

Why are people acting like the Dolphins pushed for or started these trade talks (rumors?)?

If the reports are true, Smith is attempting to get out of his contract and increase his pay. Does anyone know the amount he wants? What if he wants top 3 TE money… hell, top 10 TE money. Should he get paid that much?

What are the Dolphins PPG vs “good teams” compared with the rest of the league against those teams.

This isn't really hard to parse out what is going on with the team, the fans don't need someone from the team to come out and say what is going on.
Decisions have consequences and the people in charge, particularly Grier, should be grateful they work for an owner that is inordinately patient.
Here is one noted Phin Phan's take on it. I agree to a point, guy's don't want to play for a goober.
