Jonnu Smith Trade?

"Smith’s preference, per sources, is to stay in Miami under a reworked deal."

Welcome back.

Probably went over my head because it’s still a stupid point to compare a primary target like hill and a 3rd or 4th option like Jonnu.

Nobody said other tight ends could produce like Jonnu, you made that up. My point is he’s not needed. We had better offenses in 2022 and 2023 without a good tight end target. He’s more of a liability in this offense as he can’t block so he’s essentially a 4th option wide out who telegraphs our plays. An actual tight end who’s not nearly the receiver as jonnu but can make an occasional catch while giving Miami the flexibility to run or even keep in to pass block would be way more valuable to Miami’s offense than Jonnu.

You also skipped the part where I said even if you are 100% he’s still 31 and wants a multi year deal worth 10+ million

You think comparing our offense last season vs the 2023 season is a fair comparison? You know our starting QB missed like 1/3 of the season last year right?

It was obvious that defenses have honed in on our predictable offense with two safeties deep which is why a TE like Jonnu was able to find success. You are still assuming that guys like Malik will step up and thats a bold assumption to make. The Erik Ezukanma was a fail. Nick Westbrook-Ikine could be cedrick Wilson fail.

Im not saying that Jonnu is all world and needs to become highest paid player but you are severely downplaying how important viable weapon he can be on our offense since we currently have no other good TE on our roster. We don't even have a big body WR. We hope nick Westbrook-Ikine can fill that role but we don't know what that will look like. And after the OBJ fail and Cedrick Wilson fail, and the chase claypool fail, i have my doubts. Call me crazy.

IMO, Tua gets the ball out quickly for two reasons. One, because Grier can't build a competent o-line that gives the QB time to let plays develop downfield. And two, Tua can only look decent at QB when he gets the ball out quickly, because he's not able to EFFICIENTLY move around and evade pressure and either make off-script plays like Mahomes or be a threat running the ball like Allen. IOW, Tua NEEDS to get rid of the ball as quickly as possible, and we've seen times when it doesn't matter if that receiver is open or not.

The reason the ball comes out so quick is the offensive scheme primarily which is built around Tua.

It has nothing to do with the oline which is why Miami to date has failed to really invest anything in the guard position for example.

From a financial stand point.

If Jonnu turned out to be one of our most productive players this year what do you think our record would look like week 17? If our 3/4 wr dont pan out, with or without Jonnu, were screwed. I wish you guys would get that through your heads.

I agree with this for the most part, but I think it's less about the o-line and more about the scheme. The scheme is built to protect Tua, and considering he was almost out of the league, it's the smart play.

One thing I think that's interesting is if time to throw was an issue. Why doesn't Tua play out of shotgun more?

You people really love to complain about everything.

First of all Grant is not just a nose tackle but even if he was a good NT is far more important to our defense than a tight end is to our offense especially one that can’t block. We had the #1 offense with Durham smythe as our tight end in 2023 in case you forgot.

Last year Jonnu was great but he hardly changed our offense, in fact the year he played we had the worst offense under McDaniel so don’t get this irrational take.
Warren is a future Pro Bowler — maybe even as a rookie. Hopefully Grant becomes a starter. I wouldn’t get too hung up on roster fits for this offensive or defensive scheme. Not sure they’re going to be around all that much longer.

Tua can't get everyone paid off of one career season.

What a dumb thing to say, you have no clue how any player will turn out.

lol acting like we can’t look at the games he played and compare. Did any of the games Tua played remotely resemble either the 2022 or the 2023 offense?

You are severely overrating him nor has anyone honed in on anything. We shot ourselves in the foot running tweedle Dee and tweedle dum at guard then Austin Jackson going down, it’s that simple. We weren’t running any magical offense that teams figured out, you can’t sit in 2 deep if a team can run and we couldn’t. I’m not sure if they’ll be able to this year, I hope but Jonnu does nothing to help either way. If we can’t, offense will be stagnant again with or without him. He’s not saving anything, he’s not a difference maker. He certainly not helping by telegraphing our plays since he can’t block for ****. You’ve yet to comprehend the value of why a tight end like smythe who could stay in and block or they have the option to run our pass on the field is far more helpful to this offense than jonnu’s role as pretty much a big wide receiver.
