DAVIE, Fla. (AP) — Dion Jordan might have found a spot at linebacker for the Miami Dolphins.

Drafted as a defensive end, Jordan showed a knack for the linebacker position last week in Miami's 37-35 victory over the Minnesota Vikings

Jordan's versatility and unique athletic skills made him attractive enough to Miami in 2013 to trade up to the third overall pick. But a lingering shoulder injury limited his snaps as a rookie and he was suspended for the first six games of this season for use of banned substances.

With four-time Pro Bowl player Cam Wake and Olivier Vernon ahead of him at defensive end, Jordan has been used in specially designed speed rush packages and to cover the bigger tight ends in the division like New England's Rob Gronkowski.

"The nice thing about him is we can put him at a linebacker and he can drop in coverage, or we can put him at linebacker and he can rush," coach Joe Philbin said. "They (the opponents) have to figure out how they can count him, so to speak, in terms of their offensive identification system.

"I think that's one advantage of having him out there is it creates a little bit of indecision and sometimes he can play man-to-man, he can play zone, he can rush the quarterback. I think his versatility and flexibility is a big advantage for us defensively."

Would have been nice to see this in week 7, better late than never I guess

I wonder if there is a chance he could be a middle linebacker? He is kinda built like Karlos Dansby.

Dion Jordan is listed at 275 lbs but Omar recently reported that he's up to 290 lbs. How many 6'7" 290 lb linebackers are there? I've never heard of one.
I like that Coyle is using him in a variety of roles (and he seems to excel on Special Teams) but at that size, don't be surprised if his future is not as a linebacker. It will be interesting to see if the trainers have him losing some of the massive weight gain from this year.

Do not believe anything Omar says. He is 6'6" 275. I see no problem with him being the SLB at 6'6" 265.

Miami should use him like the way New Engkand uses Chandler Jones. I can see him at MLB his huge and athletic built can stop the run or drop back and cover.

I wouldn't be shocked if this LB talk and play is to drum up interest in an off-season trade either.

Finally, after playing him out of position for 2 years, Coyle and Philbin are learning how to use him for is strengths/athleticism. After asking for this since he was drafted I only have one thing to say. About ****ing time!

In the division Fins play they need as many pass rushers as they can get. Finding another OLB who can rush the QB and coverver like Jenkins would be huge. They need his skills for this defense and finally it appears Coyle is learning how to use them. Now Jordan just has to get back down to around 260-265 this offseason so he gets that explosion back.

Its not like 90% of this message board has been calling for this guy to play lb since day one or anything....

This is exactly why I hate the argument that fans can't question what coaches or personell guys do because they obviously know better, and they have their job for a reason. Let me tell you something, there's no way that I could simply step into a franchise and immediately become a great GM, but as far as personell decisions go, there is no way in hell I would have done worse than the likes of Speilman, Mueller and Ireland over the last 10 years.

I agree as you can never have enough pass rushers, but I don't trust Coyle or Philbin. It almost seems to me as if they didn't play him to spite Ireland for drafting him. I wasn't a fan of the pick, not because of his abilities, but didn't like moving up for him and never thought he could be a 4-3 DE. I always thought he was a 3-4 OLB and still think he is. I am still not sold he's a fit for Coyle's defense as a 4-3 OLB. If they used him how Del Rio uses Miller then I think it would work, but I don't think Coyle is that creative, so that's why I could see them maybe trying to showcase and drum up interest.

I've always hated that "They're the GM because they know more than the average fan" line of thinking. I've seen some of the dumbest trades, draft picks, and contract signings take place (in all sports, not just football), that made me realize long ago, "No, that's simply not always true."
