Phillips’ past three games have seen him block or deflect four passes and alter a few others. He’s tied with defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh for the lead among defensive linemen in passes deflected and second on the team despite a fraction of Suh’s playing time.

Last Sunday’s deathly dull defensive struggle with Baltimore came to life after a Phillips deflection turned into safety Reshad Jones’ interception that turned into a 7-0 Dolphins lead one play later. That started the explosion of 18 points from both teams in the last three minutes of the half.

“That’s just what we’re taught — when we rush, put our hands up,” Phillips said. “Any way you can alter a play is a good feeling.”

What’s strange is the past three games have seen Phillips block more passes than he did in three years at Oklahoma. Just in the first of those three games, the loss to Dallas, Phillips equaled his college total by getting his hands on two passes.

“There is a knack for that because if it was easy everyone would just rush the passer, put their hands up and knock the ball down. But he’s kind of got some instincts when it comes to that,” Dolphins defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo said the day after the Dallas game. “He’s getting close to the quarterback and when the ball is about to come out he’s getting that big hand up there. Fortunately for us he’s getting better at it, which is great because, again, it’s one less pass that you have to defend. In this league those are potential big plays.”

He got credit for four tackles, among which was the fourth-and-1 quarterback sneak stop that ended a 15-play Ravens drive on the Dolphins’ 2-yard line.

“He got excellent penetration and stood the center and the guard up that allowed everybody to get in on the play,” Dolphins interim coach Dan Campbell said. “I mean Suh was involved in that as well, but that was encouraging for him to do. … And he made some nice plays in the run game too.”

Looking like a really good pick, hope he continues to get better and better.

that guy was in throwing lanes all the time on Oklahoma tape too...it's not a coincidence it's a skill he has...batting passes

that said he needs to up his conditioning looks a little gassed when he gets more run and he needs to dedicate himself to the game to reach his ceiling...he's a real talent but he must anchor better or he's gonna be a spot run guy...

there's potential for this kid to take off in 2016 and 2017...

A legit talent in the middle that could end up becoming one of the best tandems in the game with Suh...

He is flashing for sure.
As a Dolphin fan I am not used to seeing this many rookies play, really enjoying it, pretty much what I am watching the games for right now.

Needs to play with better leverage at times and needs to anchor better, but damn he has potential especially with his rare athleticism.

He blocked one of them with his helmet, not his hands.

I watched the Jets tape last night. Dan Fouts said Phillips is 6-6. I remember Oklahoma listing him at that height. Then he's 6-5 as a pro.

Either way, it's not ideal for that position.

Phillips is out of shape, as hoops emphasized. I mentioned that after the first exhibition game, that his frame and conditioning look more like a 7th rounder or free agent than a second round pick. He may be hustling out there but it hasn't translated to pride in his body type and getting in condition to play that position. He's already fighting uphill as a run defender given that height. But obviously it helps toward the aspect spotlighted in this thread -- deflecting passes.

I like the kid, but in all honesty after picking up Suh and with all of the other holes on this team.....I was scratching my head with this pick in the 2nd round. As good as he might be, would rather have a LB, CB, or OL right now that is playing well.

Glad he is smart enough to put his hands up when he can't get to the QB.

Hopefully, he works on his stamina over the offseason. Has the ability to be a very good DT, up to him to reach it

I just hope he stays healthy. If he does, he will be a very good player.

still would have like to see what denzel washington perryman could have done for us

Is Perryman doing well in San Diego? I thought he was over rated.

He's doing ok. 5 starts 46 tackles FF and a sack. I think Phillips will be good too but if they are playing around the same level I would rather have had Denzel the MLB from the U. We need a leader and a thumper at MLB again
