New Dolphins defensive coordinator Vance Joseph will unveil his defensive plans when he meets with the media for the first time on Thursday.

But one thing is already clear: He will continue to run a 4-3 defense, according to a source.

It’s no surprise that the Dolphins want to stick to a 4-3 — it’s the defense best suited for Ndamukong Suh and it’s also what Joseph is familiar with from his time as defensive backs coach of the Bengals.

The Dolphins are at the Senior Bowl this week scouting talent with major needs in the secondary and at linebacker. They are also looking to add defensive line depth.

It’s still undetermined whether Miami will bring back cornerback Brent Grimes or defensive end Cam Wake at their current salary — they’re both more than a $9 million cap hit next year although neither is guaranteed.

Wake has said he is open to a possibly restructure. Grimes hasn’t publicly said if he would take less money to return.

Good news. We don't have the players to go straight to a 3-4. That tells me Vance is a realist.

cant go 3-4 with so much committed to Suh

makes sense to me...I guess we will find out how much his scheme can hide a mike lb deficiency

What makes you think they have already decided to not get a mlb?

I mean it wouldnt surprise me if t-bum stays with shepherd but was there some statement recently that made you believe no mlb help is coming?

We certainly could if we we're to run a one gap scheme as Suh could still play the 3 tech at a DT position alongside the NT and DE, but we don't have the other pieces to fit into any other parts of the mold and obviously at this time seems to be a mute point.

Anyways, good to know Joseph at least displays the know how as to what he is coming into and will work with what we do have. Joseph, far and away, has the most difficult job, IMO.

We can't put three decent linebackers on the field. Why would anyone think we could get 4?

O-line Coach, Chris Foerster has a massive job too, Shula.

His biggest job will be trying to clean up his desk space . . .

Miami will keep a 4-3 defense. That means the Dolphins would like to add a natural mike linebacker to upgrade on Kelvin Sheppard, with the knowledge that they can move Koa Misi back there as a last resort if their search turns up empty.

The best player at the Senior Bowl this week might be Reggie Ragland, a standout at middle linebacker for Alabama the past two seasons. Ragland, whom Mel Kiper projects to go within a few picks after the Dolphins’ selection at No. 8, will play outside linebacker Saturday at the Senior Bowl.

Misi as the fallback plan at mike yet again...clown shoes...with an empty cupboard at strong after misi no less unless dion jordan who cant be counted on somehow took the gig which would mean a 20 lb weight reduction to 255 to get the athlete back...we know the mccain kids not smart enough to play a thinking position

If this team takes reggie ragland at 8 i will straight up break ****...in a 43 at pick 8 to play mike thats just :bobdole:

If true IMO that is good news to hear for at least this year. I have no problem switching to a 3/4 but it will take at least one year to get some guys we need to fill some of the positions and if we can land a couple of them this year then next year would put us in position to make the move. Too many holes even with our 4/3.

Wait...what? Am I missing something? Best player is playing out of position?

By Ragland's choice as he wants to show his versatility at the Senior Bowl. He wants to prove he can also rush the passer and drop into coverage.
