The Dolphins named Josh McCown the starter for Saturday's contest, but the competition is far from over. McCown, John Beck and Chad Henne will each use the preseason reps to make his case for the starting role.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, apparently there is a contradiction in reports here. Espn dot com has a columnist who "heard" a rumor that Beck was to start the Sat game against Bucaneers and play 1st and 3rd Qs.

Well, apparently NFL dot com heard differently.

Who is more reliable?

I go with the NFL Network, being that it is actually the "official" channel/website of the NFL.

So sorry, Beck lovers, I know that you guys got yourselves excited over the apparent rumor of an espn columnist and what he "heard"...but the "official" website of the NFL has informed us that the MIA have turned in their official starter: JOSH MCCOWN. Sorry.

Sorry bro. That's an old link, most likely based on a Tony Moss note that got pub on KFFL that was inaccurate and not even what Tony wrote.

Beck and Henne. No McCown.

Here's the ACTUAL Tony Moss note from Sports Network...

6. Buccaneers at Dolphins, Aug. 9th - New Miami head coach Tony Sparano has indicated that he'd like to have a quarterback starter named by the first preseason game. Thus, whoever trots onto the field first at Dolphin Stadium on this particular Saturday - Josh McCown, John Beck, and Chad Henne are the current candidates - will lead Miami boldly into the post-Cleo Lemon era. Our money is on McCown, who wouldn't have left Oakland to be a backup with a team worse than the Raiders.

That got translated to a KFFL note that said the following...

Dolphins | McCown to start preseason opener
Fri, 8 Aug 2008 10:42:56 -0700

Tony Moss, of The Sports Network, reports Miami Dolphins QB Josh McCown will start the team's preseason opener Saturday, Aug. 9, against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

As you can see, an inaccurate statement based on what Tony wrote.

The NFL.com folks then probably took that note, and turned it into...

The Dolphins named Josh McCown the starter for Saturday's contest, but the competition is far from over. McCown, John Beck and Chad Henne will each use the preseason reps to make his case for the starting role.

Which was written BEFORE Chad Pennington was signed. Since then, however, ESPN has heard that Beck and Henne will play and not McCown.

it doesnt make a difference to me. Beck is gonna beat him out no matter what.

As much as Id love to hear that Beck isnt even playing, I believe they just went by the depth chart that was released early in the week when they put this up.

BTW, that ESPN columnist is none other than Tim Graham, who use to work down here for I believe the Palm Beach Post.

I believe the Henne/Beck story more. ck usually knows what is more reliable.

are you sure?

I'm about 90% certain.

I mean, like I said. Tony Moss put out his note where he simply said "our money is on McCown" and then KFFL took that moments later and turned it into "McCown will start" and then not long after that you see on the NFL preview that the Dolphins have named McCown the starter...and all of this happened before the Chad Pennington signing occurred.

I trust the ESPN note from Tim Graham not only because he still likely has contacts in Miami from when he worked here just a few months ago, but also because it's the only report on the situation that takes account of the Pennington signing.

Plus, on WQAM earlier today Mad Dog Jim Mandich said he spoke with Kim Bokamper and KimBo seemed to be insinuating that Josh McCown won't be playing at all...that was before the Pennington signing...so I think KimBo may have gotten wind that the Penny stuff was serious and that it meant bad things for McCown, and he was trying to insinuate that to Mad Dog without saying in so many words.

How does that mesh with the thought that the quarterbacks were informed of the decision Thursday? I suspect McCown could have been the odd man out per Sparano on Thursday, but I just got the impression that McCown sure seemed like he was okay with whatever decision Sparano made...maybe just a bad read on my part.

Well it makes sense. Josh wont be on the team, so why waste precious reps and not give them to guys who are going to actually be in the offense come the season (i.e. John and Henne).

My guess? I think they told the quarterbacks on Thursday that McCown will start and Henne will clean up.

Then, they signed Pennington. That plan had to change. Now McCown is clearly no longer in our plans so there is no point getting him reps. I thought they might give him some just to do him a favor and help him hook on somewhere...but they must figure $2.5 million just to show up for a few weeks of training camp is favor enough.

What was perplexing about their talking with the QBs about the rotation on Thursday was, Sparano did not allow them to divulge to the press their plans. When Henne looked like he was going to crack, a media guy with the team pulled him aside to let him know not to say anything. There wasn't even a reliable leak, which is pretty remarkable. And, Sparano didn't have any press contact scheduled until after the game. It was really looking like we weren't going to know until they trot the QBs out there tomorrow and that would just be really weird...

...unless you weren't letting anyone know because you knew this Pennington thing was going to happen.

Interesting...it sure seems like that scenario fits all the puzzle pieces together. If that scenario is the way things played out I would expect McCown to be gone sooner rather than later, as I'm sure he would see the writing on the wall after being yanked from the rotation.

I think they WOULD just release him...however, Pittsburgh just lost Charlie Batch to a broken collarbone tonight. He's supposed to only be out 4-6 weeks...but the Dolphins may keep hold of McCown for a bit to try and get him to a team that suffers a similar injury.

Also, the Patriots could snatch up McCown if we let him go. Matt Cassel is in a dog fight for his job, is rumored to be hitting the sauce, Matt Guttierez isn't that good, and Kevin O'Connell is a rookie. Plus, Bill Belichick is just like Bill Parcells...he loves picking up division players and picking their brains about the playbook.

CK is choosing who he wants to believe. the truth is that NFL dot com is the official website of the nfl, not espn. to me its pretty clear that Beck is the one gone. but some just refuse to accept the writing on the wall.

But if you follow ESPN, Mortensen himself said on NFL LIVE, when asked, "so now who's the odd man out?"

Mortensen responded with, "John Beck. Because he has no loyalty from the FO(they didn't pick him)...and because he has had the 'WORSE' TC and OTAs than all the QBs."

Take it for what its worth.
