Thanks guys for this appreciate the feedback on our new guy.
My take on all this is that I wanted Rosen last year when he was there (with a small trade up) to go get, we didn't get him and took Minkah instead. Had you told me then that in 12 months time we would have him and Minkah, and the leader of the national champs D on the team I would have been delighted.
The fact that we are getting a first round draft pick, who remember is still only 22, younger than our #1 taken this year for peanuts, less than what we are paying for what may end up being his back up, is a fantastic piece of business that will allow us scope to build a team around him if he pans out.
Trading for him makes so much sense the more I think about it. We are in a luxurious position of being able to assess a QB who has be picked out as a huge talent from his middle school days, someone that another team moved up in the draft to pick high in the first round. We can do this in an environment where wins really don't matter and with a senior QB in the room who has been around the league a long while, has a reputation of being an excellent presence in there and can challenge Rosen on a intellectual level. He's also go a QB coach here that is respected throughout the league, again is very experienced and been an HC in the past.
The other aspect to all this is that we are still very much in the game next year, we are not tied to Rosen at all, if he doesn't work out, financially we won't lose much if we cut him. I wanted us to take Haskins at 13, we didn't so I would assume the FO did love the kid, they are tied to that decision now and if Haskins goes on to be an elite QB, they will forever be called out for that decision if we fail to find our own franchise guy in the next year or two. I wanted us to get Lock too in the second, we would have had to jump Denver who were always going to take him but we didn't. However had we taken Lock in the second it would have complicated the 2020 draft for taking a QB in the first unlike Rosen where we haven't tied ourselves to him, the Broncos are tied to at least giving Lock a chance assuming Flaco doesn't do a Bradford and plays pretty much all the season there. If we had picked either Haskins in the first or Lock in the 2nd, barring a Zona kind of season another QB in 2020 was probably out of the question.
After the draft I'm actually looking forward to this season a lot more, it's going to be fascinating to see if we have our franchise guy or whether we have to wait until April next year to pick him. No expectations on the season, no pressure, no divisive coaching staff and a new QB whom I'm sure will not be given 7 years to prove himself.
